Hi Guys
I am after some help
I noticed over the last few weeks an oily mist on the screen, stbd side after a flight. now oil is smearing the lower cowl beneath the propeller. The oil is also spraying on the propeller slip ring and clogging the carbon brushes and therby causing slow or intermittent changing of the Airmaster propeller. The total oil loss is minimal its just inconvenient and messy.
Do you think the seals around the prop have failed and is this because a bearing is failing also? Is it a straight forward job to repair and are special tools required? I regreased the Airmaster propeller a few weeks ago and firstly imagined I had overgreased but now i am convinced its oil from the shaft. I have checked the breather in case it was blocked as that might have caused the problem
Regards to all and anticipating some lively replies
Bill

Bill,
Clean the engine and run it with the cowl on with leak detector in suspect areas. I use a talc like oil leak spray that sticks to the engine and allows visual confirmation of where the oil leak is coming from. Messy putting talc on it but it works. It must have a sticky substance to hold the talc in place. There are dyes to add to the oil and UV lights in the kit to detect the source also. Since oil blows around, you must do this with the cowl on, run it on the ground, de-cowl and look.

Questions:
912, 912S or 914? Total time on engine.  What engine serial number. Did you mess with any of the case bolts? Last time oil lines serviced? If a 912 series, do you have the new fuel pump?

There are many sources of leaks identified in the Service Bulletins over the years from cracked blocks between the cylinders, to oil pump seals, to the gearbox PTO seals. Oil tank fittings have also been known to crack.

You must do some detective work. Get on Google and the Rotax Owners site and start looking for your serial number and some fixes

Gear boxes are best left to a Rotax shop in my opinion. They have the tools etc.
Oil seal replacement on the pump is not hard, depends on the engine.
Oil lines are fairly routine owner stuff.
If you messed with the crank case bolts, it is your fault, and fixing it is not an option except for a pro to reseal a case.
If the case has cracked, I hope you have a warranty, otherwise it is a short block which can cost quite a bit but you will get the new case which is vastly better than the old ones.

Best Regards,

Bud Yerly

Hi Bill,
I have had this before. Most likely spots of grease from the prop hub after maintenance. Slightly over packed grease around collars. Slowly becomes less and less as time goes on. Check the bore collars for correct tightness and wipe away excess grease.
Cheers,
Tim

Hi Bud & Tim
I appreciate very much your detailed replies to my problem. As Bud says detective work is necessary.. I didnt need to investigate in depth as over the weekend I brushed the whole area in denatured alchool and ran the engine again. its quite evident that the 'leak' is from the propellor hub as Tim alludes. Its true I did service the propeller unit in the spring and probably was too generous with the grease and the recent hot weather in the uk with high engine temperaturs exacerbated the problem.. I am not sure if the brushes absorb oil and grease but they are not making 100% contact so i will replace them. I have taken onoard Buds advice regarding the gearbox maintenance but maybe its not necessary at the moment as the engine is only around 500hrs I bought the aircraft at 400 hrs but it first flew in 2006
once again Bud & Tim Thank you for your response. maybe saved me some hard earned cash as i was quoted $1500 for a gearbox/seal replacement
Bill
By the way Bud I live quite close to Steve Pitt but have little contact
