I have a Gretz heated pitot tube that has decided to stop heating. The red “Temp Low” and yellow “heat on” lights come on but no spike in electricity drain and no heat. Before I start the troubleshooting I just wanted to ask if there are any known trend items to check first?

Thanks,
Marcus

In the event my 17 year old pitot tube is toast I found the Garmin heated pitot tube for experimental aircraft at Aircraft Spruce. Much cheaper plus is designed for the G3X which I now have. Any experience with it? It appears to use the Gretz mount but any confirmation?

Thanks again,
Marcus

On my RV-14 build, I didn't try to even find the Gretz anymore since the
Garmin
is out and the Gretz is harder to come by.  So I have the heated Garmin
in my
RV-14 and it works great.  I'd buy one in a heartbeat for my RV-10 if my
Gretz
even hiccups. It does use the same mount, I think.  I don't remember buying
the mount for the -14 but it was the same mount I used on the 10, which was
the Gretz.

Me too, I installed a Dynon heated pitot after the Gretz melted close on a 30 minute flight.

My Gretz gave up the ghost about 18 months ago. I found a complete Gretz unit on VAF and bought it for a great price. Troubleshooting pointed to the board, so I installed it and it worked great for a few months. Then it failed again, so I bought the Garmin, installed it in the Gretz mount, and all is well. The Gretz served me well for about 10 years of constant use. I could never get any response from Angus Aviation, so it was time to move on.

I have the Dynon pitot tube with temperature controlled heater and AOA port. Fits in the same mount, I’m pretty sure. No complaints.

I can confirm that both the Dynon pitots do indeed fit in the Gretz mount.

AFAIK most pitot mounts and pitot assemblies conform to the AN standard.
Dynon offers a pitot mount designed for RVs.
