I’m working up my courage to bond in the windows. I note that for preparation of the glazing rebates, page 35-5 of the build manual says:

“Scuff sand the rebated areas of the doors and front screen”

In general, for bonding anything to areas of prepreg that have gel-coat, I have ground (sanded or power-filed) off the gel-coat so that the bond will be to the underlying composite rather than the gel-coat. That’s based on advice I had from Neville who also said that all abrading prior to making bonds or layups should be quite aggressive. The above advice to “scuff-sand” seems in comparison a bit wimpish and suggests that the gel-coat need not be removed, only roughened.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Will I cause a problem if I sand off the gel-coat on the rebates?

in friendship

Hi Rowland
I had the same advice from Nev.
I took off all the Gel Coat from the rebates, not only to give a good bond but the windscreens are slightly thicker than the rebates and taking the Gel Coat off also minimises the amount of filler needed to get a good transition from the plexiglass to door and fuselage mouldings.
I also removed the Gel Coat from the side of the rebate so the Araldite gets a good bond around the edge of the screens as well. I filled the edge gap with the araldite rather than filler.
Worked ok for me although I still have the filler task to do to get a smooth profile.
Good time to put the windscreens in - no problems with the 420 curing in this heat!

I just use an electric finger file on the rebate to take the shine right off. Next time around I shall make sure there is a 3 mm gap all round as a transition for any bits that end up slightly proud. Ive generally had the windows papered over and the doors on and used ratchet straps round the whole fuselage and some bits of ply or card to apply pressure at the right points.
