My experience is that it works ok on the ground, but good luck getting a decent signal while flying.
I can never seem to get one above 2000 feet.

The problem with cell phones in the air0 isn't distance from the tower (you can be right over it 2000 agl and not get0 reception) but the angle of the transmitted beam. Cell towers are designed0 and constructed to issue the beam in a flat, horizontal pattern...after all,0 that's where most people walking around are--on the ground. Once at 10000 agl or above, reception is hit-n-miss, with a bias toward the0 latter.

I installed a Garmin 396 with XM weather in my F-1. If you have the room I would highly recommend it. It is a great product. Subscription is $600/year plus the cost of the 396 but you also get a great GPS, terrain avoidance, and the potential for traffic avoidance when used in conjunction with the appropriate transponder.
