Dear listers,

I am one of the many trying to figure out an engine for my RV7. I am interested in the IO-390 engine. If you have installed
one of these on your airplane, I would be interested to hear if there are any installation problems compared to the
IO-360 series (spacing, cowling attachment, etc) and also how your performance numbers look.

John,

I have an IO-390 in my -7A. I can't speak for performance numbers yet
(although wait a week and I'll see), but my installation is pretty
much done. I ran into three issues that were -390 specific.

First was the alternator bracket. I have the 60amp internally regulted
model from Van's and the supplied bracket didn't line up with the
flywheel. It was a pretty easy fix, though. I just flipped it around
and riveted on a new piece of angle for the alternator attach hole and
sliced the othere one off. It looks like Van's is selling an
alternator kit with a bracket that looks more like the one B&C sells
now, so this might not be a problem anymore.

The prop governor for the -390 is located up front, which is good and
bad. Good in that apparently it is easier to run the control cable,
but the bracket for holding it can be a bit of a challenge. Check out
www.io-390.com. There are a couple of examples of how it can be done.
The way I did it is on the contributions page.

The biggest headache (relatively speaking) though was the baffling. It
will take a little restructuring (at least it did for me) behind cyl
#4 as the barrels are physically larger than on the -360. Also, with
the prop gov up front, you'll have to do some chopping to get the
baffles up there to fit.

I didn't have any spacing or engine related cowling issues. I have
plenty of clearance between the cowling and exhaust with the -360
setup. All told, most of the issues were minor and should certainly be
worth the extra 10-15hp IMHO. We'll see though.
