You are correct ... I recently read in the NY Times and also herd it on the
news that our government has mandated that by 2010 ALL GAS will have at least
10% alcohol (call it ethanol if you wish). That puts me in a VERY BAD MOOD.
It is a great way to reduce the numbers in interest of flying GA. Sort of a
squeeze play on GA.

You are correct in an other way also. I have been flying two RV's
(Experimental) more than I have been flying my Grumman of late. And in both of them I
have been using MoGas, as I always have done; now it is with alcohol. BTW, the
planes fly and I cannot really notice any difference. Maybe in GPH but only
time will tell about the long term effects. I would guess that Lycoming
engines will have the same problems as automotive engines and vice-a-versa.
I also have an idea about spending some of the AYA monies but the GG is not
the place to discuss that.

OK, the AYA money expenditure idea is this:
Why not develop a test to determine if alcohol does affect our engines?
I know, I know, the number of people in the AYA that fly using MoGas is very
small and the AYA will not see any return on their monies ... Unless we take
the test information and publish it in aviation magazines.
But the test would be very simple, here is my first draft on the testing
process:
1 - Obtain five (5) sets of ALL gaskets and sealant used in our fuel system
and engine.
One set to be the control group.
One set to be 100% immersed in 92 Octane in a sealed glass container such as
a baby food jar.
One set to be only 50% immersed in 92 Octane in a sealed glass container such
as a baby food jar.
One set to be 100% immersed in AvGas 100 LL in a sealed glass container such
as a baby food jar.
One set to be only 50% immersed in AvGas 100 LL in a sealed glass container
such as a baby food jar.
2 - Measurements will be done on ALL parts. Measurements will consist of
Dimensional and Weight. If parts are too small for gram scale measurements
Specific Gravity can be used.
3 - Gas will be replace in all test containers every 2 weeks.
4 - Measurements will be done every month.
5 - A report will be issued under two conditions - a> If there is a
catastrophic failure. b> At the end of one year.
Note: The test can be continued longer than a year if the need or gut feeling
(skepticism) insists or is non conclusive.
Note: Whenever possible a listing of the types of material being tested will
be kept.
Note: It should also be noted if any or all parts are available in different
materials.

End of proposal. And a Modest one at that!

Side note - Did you know that the gasket used on ALL of our Fuel Level
Sending Units is the SAME material used on AUTOMOTIVE applications. HMmmmm ever
hear of those gaskets failing in say 25 years? Well, mine finally did after 32
years Smile

For the last 25+ years, I've been hearing about the demise of AvGas and
how we'll all start flying diesels, and how general aviation will
crumble. It will never happen. Not in my lifetime, anyway. Before
any major changes to fuel take place, all of the engine manufactures
will have to design, develop and approve - at no cost to the airplane
owner - sequential port fuel injection with closed loop engine
management.

Recent tests of alcohol blended fuel have shown that, aside from
reducing demand on crude oil, it has less heat energy (less bang for
your buck) and actually is more polluting and costly to make.

Stop sweating the small stuff. If you want to spend money on anything,
start spending money on a sequential port fuel injection system for
Lycomings.

How can we do that? Wouldn't that be something only Lycoming can do to their
engines and approve ... With the FAA's blessing?
