More pics:

Picture 1 - The Esqual cowling when viewed from the front has a scoop for
the oil cooler. The air inlets are squared off and just generally a dragier
cowling. If you don't believe that statement ask Buzz who put a modified
Lightning cowling on his Esqual and saw some good speed gains.

Picture 2 - The Lightning cowl is a much more pleasing and flowing contoured
cowl. On the production cowlings the NACA duct has been resituated into a
duct on either side of the cowling and not in the front bottom like this.
Still you can get an idea.

Picture 3 - The Esqual wheelpants are simply covered to keep the wheels out
of the airstream.

Picture 4 - The Lightning wheelpants aren't a new idea, but the pressure
recovery wheelpants have been proven to give a better increase in speed than
the Esqual wheelpants. The original idea has been wind tunnel tested to
find a more optimum shape and reduce drag.

Pic 5 - Esqual wheelpants from another angle.

Picture 6. Lightning wheelpants from the same angle. I personally think
the looks of the Lightning wheelpants are better and the speed gains are
better too.

Hope this helps to show some of the visual differences between the two
aircraft. If you've flown the two planes then there really is no comparison
in the control of the two aircraft. The Lightning has a far better feel and
the airframe certainly is optimized more than the Esqual. Brian W.

Nice summary and comparison pics!

Only thing I can add is the Lightning is absolutely one of the most
beautiful planes out there!

Nice comparison, thanks. Is this wing comparable to the laminar flow airfoil used in the B-24, P-51 and many modern airliners? I have read about them:

and still do not quite know what I have read.

The Lightning wings sure does look like a low Reynolds number airfoil to me (which makes a laminar flow airfoil). Nick says it is one of the 6200 series which seems about right to me.

Buz,
I went back through some of the older letters and there is a well written artical by Brian W. called Pilot Report - Lightning. In it he says the wing is a high laminar flow wing. I sort of thought that, and always wondered when some experimental plane manufacturer with a small engine would come up with that idea. I just think it is amazing to have a small, good looking, fast airplane that doesn't use much gas, all in one package.

If you got the pics from the Lightning airfoil profile view you'll also
notice that the airfoil is also a relatively thick one. I didn't do the
design, but I believe that it was chosen as a giving a good tradoff of both
low drag, high lift. The takeoff distance is short, stall speed low, top
speed high, etc. It seems to be a very good airfoil for this kind of
airplane in terms of weight and speed ranges. Thanks, Brian W.

I think you will find this airfoil very efficient for the 120 hp that we use
to power the aircraft. There are probably better wings for higher or lower
hp ratings but this one functions well in the speed range that the Jabiru
3300 can provide for the aircraft.
