Bob,
Get a copy of Front Page from Microsoft and get started. It is very easy to
learn and use.
This is what I use on my website. Have used it for about 6 years now. It
does have limitations, no doubt, but its ease of use is what a first time
user will love. Take a look at my websites: www.maspl.com and

Bob, there are many on-line resources available to get started.
Do a search on HTML and Tutorial.

Forget Front Page, it is complex and has all the typical MS
bugs. Plus, it generates non-compliant HTML (that is, it doesn't
always work with all compliant browsers).
Nvu is free and works very well. There are other free editors, but I
use this one for our EAA chapter's website and have had no problems with it.

I run several web sites. Learned everything thru experience and the browse
and borrow method. HTML is fairly simple there are opening tags and the
same tag to close but uses a slash in front of the command e.g... for
bold to stop the bold
I had one site that the webmaster required the use of FrontPage. Besides
being cumbersome, it cost $150. The code was very bloated so I hand code
most every thing. I use arachnophelia for my web editor as it displays the
code and easily permits the inject of the HTML tags.
You could get some sort of reference about HTML so you can find some
examples. But find a simple site that you like, right click and look at the
code IF it is NOT flash. Change the text to show what you what to display
and try it out. Many ISPs provide "home pages" so you can create you own.
There are several Free hosts like Egoists, Tripod, and others. There are
tutorials at many of these to get started.
Start simple, then make it fancy.

The last site I listed has about 100 different pages all linked. All it took
was time.
You probably will want to get an FTP client as well as a web utility as
these will make the job easier.
I have never used NVU but the price is right.

Bob,
If you're lucky enough to have a friend or relative that can build a
website, the maintenance isn't too much to learn.
Then you can back into the knowledge needed to make changes, add pages
and do your own maintenance. At least
it's easier than the initial construction. Short of that, I'd have been
another year in construction of my plane before having a site.
I'd recommend you get someone to put the initial pages together and do
your startup, then coach you on the necessary
detail like picture sizing and organizing your name usage for images,
etc. It seems like a big project, but I'm coming from
the perspective of using a program called Dream Weaver, which is huge.
Probably much more program than needed for
what we typically do. Otherwise, go to Border's or Barns and Nobel book
stores and ask for books on web site construction.
A lot's changed the past few years and it has to be simpler than it was
when I started.
Hope you find it a little easier than I did.
