Well if you missed flying yesterday, you missed a good day of winter flying!
Larry and I are slowly doing the VA Ambassador program, where if you fly to all the airports in the state and get a stamp from that airport in the passport book they provide, you get a leather flying jacket! wow.
Now we already have our own jackets, but the idea of flying to all the airports in Virginia is pretty cool and the promise of a gift at the end is icing on the cake. We surely know we could buy a new jacket for what we will spend in fuel......but hey....we need reasons to fly and we have found it very rewarding to see the other airports and chat with new fellow aviators and airport bums telling the local lore.

Saturday, the weather and temps look favorable for a long xcountry so we skipped breakfast and headed for the farthest airport from Louisa down in the far south west corner of the state to LEE County (0VG). That leg was 263 nm and we had a slight headwind from the west and we stayed at 4500 to minimize that and we didn't push the power up and flew at about 19 inches for me and 2400 rpm for Larry (we both have 0-360's) it took 2 hours and 10 min.
We hollered for Stormy on 122.82 and 122.85 as we passed by Hop-a-long with no luck.
Lee County looks brand new and cut out of the rock.....it appears they had very little dirt to work with!
Our next stop was Wise Co. (LNP) 38 miles away. Wise was very friendly but I didn't see any food around and skipping breakfast to get an earlier start, we were getting hungry! The guy working the FBO...said there was a diner a 5 minute walk away or they had bikes we could use....2 of them.....now, I haven't ridden a bike, other than exercise bikes and not them in years, so we opted to ride the bikes, it was fun!!
and the dinner had good BBQ as well.
Our next stop was Grundy (GDY) about 30 miles away and I'll now say, most of the airports in this part of the country are on high ground rather than low ground like around our home base so it is a little different looking.....but....Grundy is 2300 foot on top of a mountain with cliffs at each end......kinda like the river end of Stormy's runway, but Stormy's is hidden from view with trees and Stormy has you approach from the opposite end so you don't really see it. Grundy is quite different, as you can see both ends and cliffs from downwind......I commented to Larry on Unicom while on downwind, that it REALLY was on top of a mountain! and a "voice" cam over the radio "it=92s an aircraft carrier...be careful! " so we really watched the numbers and anticipated up and downdrafts that never occurred. The local airport bum on the field we chatted with, said some days the wind blows from 3 different directions along the strip at the same time, oh my.
Our next stop was Tazewell or Richlands (6V3).....there we had a Cessna 140 catch us! We had talked to him in the air.....he would land as we were taking off our last 2 previous stops, but at Tazewell, we were getting gas, so he caught us. Come to find out, he was a local to our area and was based at Orange, just a short hope from Louisa where we are based.....he was doing the ambassador program too and only had 7 more stops to complete.....as it was 4:15 then.....we were all heading home from Tazewell.

Larry and I climbed to 9500 to get as much tailwind as possible and still throttled back, we had about a 40 mph tailwind as we cruised at 200-205mph........pretty nice and much quicker than the 160mph going down, especially trying to beat the big ball from setting at LKU. We again tried to raise Stormy on the air to air with no success. We passed just west of Roanoke's Class B space and while I was monitoring approach frequency (SL40) I heard our new Cessna 140 friend getting, or trying to get flight following as he passed thru their space....somehow they weren't getting his xponder, but they were talking to him and getting his position reports and doing what they could for him....I guess just southern hospitality, smile. We had smooth air all the way home to Louisa and just qualified for night landings! I'm sure the 140 driver was well after dark getting back to Orange.
The log books showed 4.8 hours of hobbs time.......and 4 airport stops....a very good day for the end of January........
We hope all of you had equally good days.......
