Hi  All..

 I thought you may be  interested in this one.

 I have a Skytec NL inline  starter on my Falco.. It has been a great unit but the other day a potentially  dangerous situation occurred.

 I was training a friend to  fly my machine (Yeah yeah.. another story) when I got out all sounded fine and  he duly taxied out for 2 circuits. On his return.. immediately he exited the  runway there was the familiar noise of the ring gear taking a hiding. What  transpired was as the picture suggests... the two screw that hold the end cap to  the starter had vanished. The end cap and gear where then being spring forced on  to the ring gear... not a good situation.. had  the gear managed to engage  the results would have been very nasty.

 If you have one of these  starters I would recommend changing the front screws for a lockable  variety.

Thanks for the information George.  I was thinking of using a B&C starter and alternator when I get to that point.  Did you consider those and did you decide against them for some reason I should know about.

HI  Al..

 The only  thing stopping me for the B&C was all the info I read on the Sequoia site  with other guys having trouble making them fit. I don't know it they have an  inline version or not now but they didn't when I was buying.

 The Skytec is  a fantastic little unit and spins the prop really well.. this is and will be an  issue for them though. I got the very first one from Rich Chiappe at Skytec so  maybe this has changed on later units. The companies support is second to none  however so I'm sure that this will be remedied if it is likely to be an issue.  

 I will  certainly be changing the screws to something I can lock wire in future  however.

  

 Hope you  project is coming along nicely.

 A third option for starters is a converted Toyota

Pick Up truck starter. These are marketed by several

folks for the experimental market. I purchased mine

from a rebuilder who sells on EBay. See

Lycomings manufactured before 1970 use the older 122

tooth ring gear starters. Although many of the older

engines have been updated. It's best to count the

number of teeth on your ring gear.

Hi Charlie..

Unfortunately these side motor style starters don't fit in a Falco.. Things

are very tight in there.

Several builders have tried and reported problems... see the skunkworks,

there is quite a bit written on starters.

The only comfortable fit is the in-line style of starter.

I think these starters are how B & C and others started out life. At least

where they got their first brain wave from.
