3/1/2006

Hello Fellow Listers, I am trying to identify an object on the bottom of the
fuselage of a Beech Sierra airplane. It is black plastic about the size of a
cigar box. Embossed on the bottom of the box is an arrow pointing forward
and the letters 3M.

It was described at one time as a GPS antenna, but that does not make much
sense to me. Why would a GPS antenna be on the bottom of the fuselage? I
also am not able to locate any antenna created by 3M.

Any good ideas? Many thanks.

The size of a cigar box... With an arrow. That puts a different wheel on
the cart.

That would be a loop antenna for an ADF. The long wire antenna, porobably
on the top, would be the sense antenna also for the ADF.

That is likely a stormscope antenna.

Storm scope antennas are similar to radar dishes and are mounted in the nose
of the plane. ( assuming it isn't single engine prop)

Just did a Google check on 3M Stormscope and you are absolutely right. That
makes me wrong... Twice! The antenna does look a lot like the ADF loop.

Storm scopes work by receiving the radio energy produced by the lightning.
Their antennas emit no energy and thus can be mounted at any RFI quite
location on the airframe.

Thanks Bruce. I had it crossed with WX radar.

I think that needs just a little qualification. Apart from being in a quiet
RFI location it must also be unscreened from a low frequency RF point of
view.

3/3/2007

Thanks to all that responded. It is indeed a Stormscope antenna made by 3M
back in the days when they were replacing Ryan as the manufacturer of that
equipment.

I would guess that it is a storm scope antenna (lighting detector).
