When starting my Lycoming O-320 I hear the gnashing of teeth and the
propeller hardly rotates. It is as if the starter motor's gear wheel
hardly engages. I do manage to rotate the propeller and start, but just
barely and after many repeated attempts. I have had the battery checked
and it is OK. Please let me know what the problem could be and possible
solutions.

Thanks.

George,

Your problem sounds like a starter problem. The solenoid is not
pushing the starter gear into the flywheel teeth.
