We need to remove the prop from our M332 engine.  We’ve managed to get the central nut loose, but still can’t get it off the drive shaft taper.  We use an Avia variable-pitch prop (electrically operated),  This locates onto a taper on the front of the crankshaft.  It is supposed to work by undoing the nut, which then comes up against a circlip within the front of the prop hub, and further undoing is supposed to pull the prop off the taper.  We have applied a lot of force to this nut, but so far, to no avail. The prop hasn’t been removed for at least ten years, and has obviously got pretty well stuck on.



Any ideas?

Sorry, not with a VP prop. I have removed the fixed prop hub from the

crankshaft a few times using a 1 cm thick metal disk with holes drilled

for the prop bolts. The rear of the plate contacts the nose of the

crankshaft and I tighten the prop nuts one at a time in a what seems like

a reasonable sequence. It takes a lot of torque! I tighten the nuts about

as tight as I dare, apply a little heat to the hub/flange, tap it with a

brass hammer and eventually there is a loud bang and the whole assembly

pops off.



Not much help in your case, but it does give an idea of the force required.

Thanks for the quick response Stephen.



Unfortunately, the fixed pitch and VP prop fitment is very different.  I’d love to be able to apply heat where it would do some good, but it’s completely inaccessible.  For the present, I’ve applied as much tension as I can to the removal nut and left it, hoping that diurnal temperature changes may have some effect.  Last time we took the prop off we did this, and had temporarily abandoned the effort while we went and had a coffee.  While we were drinking it, the prop came loose with the loud bang you described.  

I’ve attached a couple of photos showing why we need to remove the prop.
