I have an IO-540 in my rocket that was boosted to 290 hp. I recently
started having problems with it and we can¹t figure out what the problem
is.

The symptoms:

The engine runs fine until you get up to about 1600 RPM, at this point it
starts spitting and sputtering and backfiring continuously.

What we have tried:

We changed the spark plugs and checked the timing. Checked compression
and it is all good.

Has anyone had any experience with this? We can¹t figure it out. We did
find that the fuel pressure going into the spider is 30 psi and coming out
is 0, doesn¹t build pressure just has flow. I am not a mechanic just
relaying what my mechanic has told me so if some of this doesn¹t make
sense that is why.

We are at a loss, any guesses would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I’d have the divider serviced at the same time … if there’s damage to the diaphragm, fuel should be coming out the pin hole at the top with the engine running, but you’d only see it with the cowl off.

What kind of system is it?  If it's an AirFlow Performance, then send it to Don Rivera at their company headquarters in Spartanburg, SC.

Ernest,
I agree that your issue is most likely fuel servo related. However comma, I had a similar issue with a Bendix Mag combination on my C4B5. I replaced one mag and installed an Electroair Electronic IGN on the other side. Problem solved.
Might be worth a test next run up...

Ernie,
Forgot to mention one of the issues I found on mine with similar symptoms. Five of my twelve "platinum" plugs tested bad under pressure. I replaced them with Autolite 386 for the EI and REM37BY for the mag. Again, problem solved...
Worth a check...
