Hello everyone,

Can anyone offer advice about the best location to install the rectangular
sidewall vents (from the RV-10 kit) in my RV 4 fuselage? The instructions
that came with the vents are not helpful in this regard.

Thank you for the help!]

I mounted one for the back seat; positioned behind & as close to the 'A'
shaped diagonal 'bulkheads' that are under the rollbar as was reasonable
for convenient operation. It's a few inches below the canopy skirt on
the right side of the cockpit. Works just fine.

Note that any vent in the canopy skirt will flow air fine (the
rectangular ones won't fit the curved skirt) but will blow directly on
the passenger's headset mic & it won't be fun trying to set the squelch
on your intercom.

Email me off list with a phone # or I'll give you mine if you want more
details.

Charlie

Thanks Charlie. I will place the back seat vent where you suggest. Do
you have any suggestions for the front vent local?

My front seat vent is a naca below the right cheek & just aft of the
firewall, plumbed to a 2" eyeball just below the rt side of the
instrument panel. Adequate flow but requires scat tube & eyeball. If I
were doing it for the 1st time I'd consider a 'push out' vent below the
canopy rail longeron & more or less in line with the instrument panel
(just aft of the panel bulkhead). Lighter, less work, cheaper, etc.
Might get a little heat from air leakage past the cowl/firewall
intersection, though; some have reported a couple of degrees difference
in OAT probe readings in that neighborhood vs. out in the wing.

It's nice to own one built by someone else; it gives you all kinds of
ideas on what works & what doesn't when you're building your own. I'm
looking now at moving the battery from the 'tunnel' to the firewall. It
would free up a lot of storage, & every cu. in. counts in a -4.

Sorry for the tardy reply.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the tip. I love the idea of moving the battery forward. That
would help my weight and balance. I have the 0-290 up front and am currently
limited to less that 160 in the rear seat. Let me know how the battery
relocation goes...

I Moved my Odessey PC680 to the firewall 2 years ago. Works great, shortens the electical lines adds a forward glovebox where the battery used to be (I hinged the cover) and helps CG, a win-win...

Rob,

I noticed online that you are a contact for a Harmon Rocket being sold.  I am considering moving from my RV-4 to a Harmon and wanted your 2 cents worth.  What is the upside/downside of a Harmon versus an RV-4?  Is it worth the extra money?

PS- Chris Reeder (sp) busted 2 centrifuges so he is now flying with Beal I think.  He is a hard one to keep track of.  He should just come over to the dark side again and fly the predator.

Hi Dwayne,
The Rocket in a word, Rocks! I flew it from SJC-Arlington-McCall-Minneapolis-here, 2700 miles in 4 days and all I can say is what a nice way to travel. This particular Rocket is alot like the Bandit, a 97 model with round dials, but more of them. EI gauges, Navaid Autopilot Sigmatek elec horizon, and Apollo GPS. Long range tip tanks give it 54 gallons total, enough to go 800 NM easily with reserve. I flew it at 11,500, 11.5 GPH and 200 Knots true 700 mile legs(for bladder purposes). Alongside another RV4 it showed 8.2 gph at 160 knots. It has a very low time Lycon built IO540 that dynoed at 315HP with all the goodies and runs great and smooth. I really like it. Takeoffs are absolutely a hoot, makes the -4 feel like a cessna. After a week in it I was crossing the fence at 75 knots (82 mph) and touching down at 63 knots (70mph) and currently have it at my 2300' grass strip here at the swamp. I turn off at the same spot as the Bandit, the big Hartzell really helps it slow down. The owner is my best friend's brother and he needs to sell it and I'm helping find an owner that won't wreck it.
Personally, I would buy it if I could, I like it that much. My Dad and I are building a -6 together to share and keep the Bandit so I can't fathom THREE RV's....could I? Hmmmm...Anyway, I may take it up to OSH for a couple of days and see if I get any bites. Chris is asking 105K(which is cheap for a Rocket) but will entertain offers or trades...he might talk to you about your 4...
