I’m a dipstick!  A friend that looked over my engine years ago before first flight recommended making some sort of keeper for the dipstick.  I never did.  The other day, I took a couple laps around the racetrack and smelt oil.  Landed and saw oil running down the side.  The dipstick came out and made a mess.  After checking, I realized that it was a lot easier to pull out than it used to be.  After two hours of cleaning, I made a lanyard for it.

Just a heads up if anyone is flying without a retainer for it.  Make one now!

Stratus for sale!  I’m buying a 140 HP AutoFlight EA-82.

In the mean time, I’m ordering an Airmaster and will try running it on the Stratus drive.  Any comments?

Gary,
I don't understand. What would cause the dipstick to come out. I've
never experienced this problem or anything like it
in my short 60 plus. Could you elaborate on what your circumstances were.

Sure...strip your engine down and Have Ram Performance rebuild it as a 150HP motor. I think the EA81 is quite a bit lighter than the EA 82 plus Ron is rightly getting an awesome reputaion for his work. A lot of this depends on the cost.

Autoflight??...I got a feeling that might be the drive that Ram provides in any case.

Hi Gary. Where are you listing your stratus for sale, and are you setting a
price? I have a stratus setup I am thinking of selling as well and wondered
what price you would start at. I thought about trying $4,000 USD?

Brett,

I was dreaming about $5K but will sell to best offer. I'm guessing it
won't be easy to sell. It's a great deal for $4K but who knows. The
good thing is that I don't see many for sale. Come to think of it, I've
only seen one used one for sale from Vision Aircraft years ago. Who
knows.

Larry,

Not sure what happened. There is always the possibility that I'm not
perfect and didn't seat it all the way during preflight but I don't
think so. I check the oil every flight, which is a couple hundred times
and it may be just a little looser from wear. But, there may be
something else going on. I ran it a few times today and got some
weeping around the oil pan and found it needed retorquing. I also found
some dripping from the carb with the valve cover vents going to it. I
took the K&N filters off for cleaning and will run it again tomorrow.
High crankcase pressure causing all these new leaks? That's why I
wanted to clean the filters. What else could cause that?

BTW, I got my colortune plug and the mixture is the same as I saw it
before - a little rich in front and a little lean in back. That's with
K&N's and RAM heads with no jetting change from stock Stratus. I have
no EGT's but will be ordering an Advanced Flight System engine monitor
soon I hope.

Gary,
My experience was that using easier flow filters in lieu of foam with
the Ram Performance
heads put the engine lean at high rpms. You may be running in balance
unloaded at 3000
or less, but getting very high EGTs in flight. I have good history
using a 2.76 needle-jet, a #176 main
-jet, a #40 idle jet and a standard CV needle with the circlip on the
3rd-notch.
I'd recommend you check what jet sizes you have and get a good EGT
reading sometime
down the road. Lot of people disregard EGTs but really it's the best
running info you can
get for this engine.

Two things....The jetting has no effect on the state of the color tune.
The color tune only indicates mixture at idle, not at higher RPMs and
load. Thus the jets need to be checked based on the Bing manual (tie the
plane to a tree and pull the choke levers method).

As to crankcase pressure I used to get a litlle more oil blow by than I
liked. I SUSPECT that this is due to distortion of the cylinder bores as
the head bolts are torqued. Ram Performance has found significant
distortion and as such he uses a plate that replicates the effect of the
head bolts as he bores out the cylinders.

I can guarantee there are very few (if any) other shops that are doing
this.

Its "little" things like this that would have me send any of my
machining work to Ram Performance if I still owned my Subaru ngine.
