- I do not yet have the part numbers for the Ray Jay turbo chargers but would still like to know if the Inlet and Outlet hoses are available.

My aircraft also has auxiliary nose and baggage fuel transfer tanks, I have not come across any STC information or drawings for this installation.
Does anyone have or know where the drawings may be obtained?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom,

Commander-Aero has complete O ring kits for most actuator rebuilds.  I'd give them a call.  888-881-5580

Now, as to the nose and baggage fuel tanks .. Other than ferry tanks or field installed tanks for what we shall politely call special export/import flights, I've never heard of such a thing.

Of course, this is why I hang around this list.  I'm always amazed at the ingenuity this group has when it comes to enhancing their Commander and some of the mods that have ended up on them.

Tom,
Talk with Nick Freeman at Aero Air for the o-rings, phone is 800-448-2376.
They will also have the uplock springs.

The wastegates are hard to come by. If you send the unit to address below
they will rebuild them for you.

KNISLEY WELDING 1-800-522-6990
3450 SWETZER ROAD
LOOMIS CA. 95650 1-916-652-6257 (Fax)

The turbo hoses are available from:

Firetruck Aviation Arnold Blankenship 931-729-0007
Talk with Charlene and she will send you a drawing with the hose P/N's then
select the ones you need from the drawing.

Arnold also has a collection of drawings that came from MR RPM and he may
have what you need for the fuel tank drawings. He is very busy and it may
take him a while to find them though.

Thanks for all the response fellows, I will follow up on them and call those
that suggested I call.

I have a question for those of you that have a 680 FL(P) with the Cleveland
brakes.
In the wheel wells, someone has removed a section of oil breather pipe and
replaced it with a flexable hose.
I assume this was done because the Cleveland brakes have what I call wear
indicators that stick out and currently partially compress the flexable
hose. I assume that it restricts the flow a bit but not completely.
The engineers working on the annual want to reroute the hoses but I feel
that this might have been part of the STC for the brakes.

Any comments?
Is this standard on the other aircraft with this setup?

Thanks again.

Tom,

I always thought the STC for Cleveland brakes included moving the breather
pipe from the through-the-wheelwell location to the bottom of the nacelle
and in the exhaust slipstream? This also eliminates the breather icing over,
which IIRC happened to Larry Wokral recently, resulting in an engine
shutdown...

The MR RPM conversion does away with the breather in the exhaust stream and
puts it in the cooling air outlet where the cowl flaps used to be located.
The MR RPM drawing shows the breather in the exhaust stream removed and a
cover installed.

My understanding is that if you are certified known icing the breather must
go into the exhaust slip stream. Very effective, but the tops of your
nacelles will always be oily.

Again, thanks all for the inputs, need them all.
On the subject of nacelles, has anyone laminated a (removable) thin
stainless steel shield on the top of the nacelle just behind the exhaust
outlets?
Seems like an easy task and much easier to clean.

As part of the MR RPM conversion the engine breather was certified as being
free from ice accumulation and if the ship was certified known ice before
the conversion was done. Then it is still certified known ice.

Tom,

Not heard of a laminated, removable exhaust shield, but have heard of an all out replacement of the top nacelle skin with stainless.

Any idea who has the stainless skin, or do we have our mechanics do it?  My nacelles are getting pretty ragged, and this sounds just great!

Hi Tom,

I was interested to read that your 680FLP, s/n 1497-15, C-GISS, has auxiliary fuel in the baggage compartment. I understand that such a tank was offered as an optional extra on a new airplane, but the factory paperwork didn't reflect that it was accomplished at the factory for your example. It was an auxiliary system comprising 67 gallons in total, 65 of which was usable. The factory drawing would have been No. 6630214, released June 10th 1964 and was substantiated by Aero Commander Report No. APP60-087, dated August 12th 1964.

It is, I suppose, possible such a tank was also offered under an STC, but I haven't found any details.

I have researched the records held for s/n 1497 at the FAA Records Center in Oklahoma City and found nothing to substantiate the installation of your tank. However, those records obviously do not include any paperwork originated while the aircraft was under Canadian registry. As it has been so-registered for over 20 years, could the tank have been installed in Canada? I don't know, but would imagine that if it was a factory option, it would be a fairly simple process to get such a modification effected.

The auxiliary nose tank is very interesting. I have not found any paperwork at all relating to such a modification. If you are able to send me some photographs, I can run this past some of my contacts, who worked for Aero Commander's R&D guys at Norman, Oklahoma.

Incidentally, I'm hoping that records you have may tell me when a Chamberlain 2001K-B nose radome was installed (STC SA265EA) and when this was removed and replaced by a Chamberlain 3066X one (STC SA458EA). I know that a 'Miller' nose was installed under SA585SW on May 29th 1974.

As if that isn't enough, can you also confirm the exact model propellers installed (hub & blade)?

Your help will, naturally, be very much appreciated.

Very Best Regards,
Barry

 Sir Barry,

I was hoping you were monitoring this topic.

I few a 680-F(P) with a "saddle tank" that increased the center tank quantity, but from Tom's description, I thought the baggage area was tanked.

The nose tank fascinates me -- largely because of the Center of Gravity havoc it would cause.

The nose tank takes up the entire area exposed when the top nose cover is removed.
I holds 22USG and is a "transfer" tank only.  I have a switch and a light on the panel, there is no gauge at all.  The procedure is to turn on the (marine) transfer pump for 35 mins. and that fuel will transfer to the centre tank.
The baggage transfer tank is set up in the same manner.  It is located just behind the rear pressure bulkhead on the baggage floor and holds 45USG.  The transfer pump takes 55 mins. to transfer the fuel to the centre tank.
All of this gives this aircraft an endurance of 7 hours, the log book shows every single entry is greater than 6 hours day after day after day.

I will take some images of the tanks and try the new ability to Email them to this site.
