Well, actually, I got back last Wednesday.  I have 4 planes waiting for annuals; not including mine.

For the flight to Texas, I had the DAR get me an Experimental Certificate for Market Survey.  He wrote it such that I could go anywhere I wanted.  And, such that I could take passengers.  Cool huh.

Anyway, on Saturday, July 8, after filling my plane, my girlfriend, Wendy, and I flew to Napa for breakfast in the wine country.  When we got back, I finished packing for Texas, we had dessert, Wendy left for Sacto (she couldn't go to Texas because she couldn't get the time off work) and I left for Van Nuys.  Ann Marie and her husband, Mike, live there and I planned to fly to Texas with them.  We left on Sunday.

First stop was Tucson.  Then to Fort Stockton.  Then to Fredericksburg.  Total time, including ground time (we got an airport car in Fort Stockton and went for lunch.  Lou and his daughter, flying in a 2-seater, had just stopped for gas, so they came along too.) was 11 hours.  Long day.

You probably know all about the fly-in so I won't go into details.  Suffice it to say, I had a blast.  No, I didn't race my plane.  Last year, they timed to the nearest minute.  The time before that when I raced my Cheetah, they said I didn't fly down the runway the way I should; I was disqualified.  I had passed to two slowest Tigers.  No, when someone learns how to set up timers and create a real race (making a 260 turn at the turning point, like the Freddysburg race, is ridiculous), I'll race again.  It isn't worth running the plane hard just to find out they timed to the nearest minute.

I did, however, get to go into town several times with Eileen, Mike and Ann Marie, Geoff and Leslie, and just goof off.  Lots of fun.

On Friday, Matt and Mellisa (in his plane) and I (in mine) headed for Pennsylvania. We stopped in Arkansas and, I think, Kentucky and landed in PA, just South of Harrisburg.  That night, we went to a pub for Philly Cheese Steaks and Margaritas.  I spent the night.  Matt and Mel were great hosts.  hang on to Melissa, Matt, she's a keeper.

Saturday morning I woke to overcast skies and low clouds.  I had planned on flying to Martha's Vineyard to visit my daughter.  We watched the weather, went to breakfast, watched the weather, and watched the weather. When the cloud bases lifted enough to scud run out of there, I headed for MV.  Once I got to Connecticut, it cleared up fine.  My daughter and girlfriend, LuAnna, met me at the airport.  We dropped the girlfriend off and Cindy showed me around the cities on the island.  We drove to the South end of the island and watched a really cool sunset.  When we got back to where she (and I) were staying, we met up with a whole bunch of her friends to go to town and eat, drink, and got bar hopping.  It was a lot of fun.  She has some great friends.  Jason and LuAnna were great hosts.

Sunday morning, I took Cindy, her friend Gary, and Jason flying around MV.  Along the East side of the island, I got us down to 50 to 100 feet off the water and about 500 feet from the shore line and put the pedal to the metal.  There were beach goers out there who will share that with their friends and family.  At about 155 kts TAS and 50 feet MSL, I pulled up into a climb and did a gentle wing over at 1000 feet.  They loved it.  We made one more pass around the island for pics, flew out to some adjacent islands, and then back.  After topping off, I headed west.  Next stop, Columbus, OH.  It was after 7p local when I got there so I spent the night at the Embassy suites.  They have a deal there, when you fly in, you can stay at the Embassy for $89/night.  Helluva deal.

On Monday, I flew to Kansas City, KS.  I visited a guy I was stationed with in Thailand 31 years ago.  How did I find him?  On Forensic Files.  No shit.  I was working on the computer, head a familiar voice, looked up and saw Rob with his name plastered on the screen.  Thanks to TiVo, I was able to play back the whole show.  They gave his work place and city.  They rest was Google.  Rob, met me at the airport, then we went for BBQ ribs and beer.  It was as though 31 years never took place.  Things I had forgotten, he remembered, things I remembered, he had forgotten.  Rob has a great wife, Donna, and 4 kids.  Two boys and 2 girls.  I didn't get to meet the middle daughter, but the other kids were there.  Rob's a lucky guy.  That night, we went for .... you guessed it, Thai food.

On Tuesday, I flew to Salt Lake city with a top in Oberlin, KS.  You can take that city off your destination list.  My parents picked me up at the airport.  We stopped for ice cream at the Iceberg, and then headed home.  We had an easy night, just chatting and watching TV.  The next morning, my first wife and her husband stopped by.  We all had breakfast snacks, drank coffee and chatted.  Then I headed for Auburn.

Non-stop to Auburn.  I got here about 12:30p.

I haven't figured out the hours, but, I used 395.4 gallons, at an average of $4.20/gal, for a total cost of $1654.30.

Now, time to go to work and pay for my vacation.

Oh, yea, Friday and Saturday I took Wendy to Tahoe for a little R&R of our own.

Gary,

Where just south of Harrisburg did you land. I fly out of N71 (Donagal
Springs) and KTHV (York Airport). Hey, if you come up this way again,
let me know. Food and drink and boarding are on me.

Thanks Bruce.  We flew into Perkieomen.  Try saying that as you make your approach calls.  I can't remember the name of the town near by.

As we came up from Maryland and West Virginia entroute home - around
Gettysburg we dropped down to "sightseeing" level. We crossed Lancaster
county, right over the top of KTHV - over York and the Susquehana - and then
over to N10 - Perkiomen Valley - with a delightful sunset landing to cap off
a long day of flying from Texas.

I have lived in many places in my life - but flying at Piper Cub speeds and
altitudes over Lancaster County is still one of my favorite activities.

As an addendum to this - Melissa and I were the Race marshalls for the start
of the air race Gary referenced below. We used GPS timing to time, to the
second, the racers' start time as people passed the departure end wind
sock. The marshalls at the end used GPS timing when the racers crossed the
finish line. It took three of us at the start to keep the relatively simple
stats - one person to validate the plane number - one to get the time, and
one to record the result. Since Melissa is a CPA - she would not allow me
to "adjust" any timing based upon any incentives I might have received...Smile

Ironically - this just had me thinking about how, back in the day, we built
a large bi-static radar. Since the transmit and receive site were very far
away from each other - we required a time-synch between them. We used the
LORAN signal - corrected for distance from the transmitter - for that
source.

It was fun living up in Maine, building a cool technology radar, and
watching the Russians flying off the coast.

p.s. At breakfast - Gary sampled Scrapple - even AFTER we told him what was
in it. Very brave man indeed.
