I wrote a month ago about an oil temp issue. This is an update.
I live near atlanta and I have a 1976 aa5b O-360 with 300 SMOH that
I have owned since march. Since the weather has warmed up my oil
temps have been running about 1.5 to 2 needle widths from the red-
line. The things I have done to try to resolve this issue are:
I replaced baffle seals.
I fixed the inter cylinder baffles that were not wired together.
We just recently pulled the vernatherm and it looked to be seated
correctly and operated as expected when we checked it.
We also checked the gauge. Unfortunately it seems to reading low not
high! We are now checking the timing.
The only thing I can think of left is the Oil cooler. Which brings me
to this question.

What are my options? I think i am just going to go with a new oil
cooler rather than re-condition. Are there any STC's for a larger
cooler and if so can someone send me that info? Have any of you guys
had field approvals for a different cooler?

I have a similar problem. I purchased '76 Cheetah two years ago and the
engine oil temp has never run near normal (180 degrees). And lately, with
the added hot summer OAT (Huntsville, AL) , the engine oil temp has been
running 2 - 3 needle widths from Red Line. I had the engine overhauled with
the engine baffels and seals replaced at the same time. Having a 5 channel
engine monitor allows me to monitor all 4 cylinder head temps with No. 4
running the hottest. My CHT readings tell me that it's not a cooling problem
as the CHTs run consistently below 400 degrees, usually around 370 -390 in
cruise. I also have an ADC Eng Oil Filter system which eliminates changing
the oil filter. ADC adds say the added filter system and fins should aid in
cooling but I haven't noticed any difference.

After a long instrument training flight today where the oil temp was again
2 - 3 needle widths from red line, I took a long look under the cowling,
again checking the baffels, seals, ect. No problem there. I noticed a sharp
bend in the oil line from the engine to the oil cooler to the point I
believe the line to be crimped, thus possibly restricting oil flow. The only
other thing I can think of is the oil cooler. I believe it to be too small.
When Excel-Air overhauled my engine, John Jaardema (Sp) mentioned that I
could opt for a larger oil cooler with an additonal cooling vane; however, I
opted to keep the OEM oil cooler instead, probably not a good idea.

Anyway, I'm going to have my local maintenance folks take a look at it,
checking the temp bulb, baffels, etc. I'd appreciate any options or
solutions any may have.

What I have noticed, is that the condition of the fins make a big difference. I also like the 8406 oil cooler although I don't think Fletcher's oil cooler STC's include this one. Why not I can't say. It isn't vacuum brazed like the Niagra oil coolers they recommend.

I also noticed a 15 degree decrease in oil temp (at an ambient of 115+ on the desert) when using the larger cooling air exit ramps that I have made to order.

Send me some really detailed pics of all of your baffling. Let me see what you have.

Thanks
