601 HD Main Gear Bungees

Speaking of bungees ....

I'm just installing the bungees for the main gear on my 601 HD. After
spending some time building a device to compress the bungees, I found that
simply shaping the bungees with temporary plastic ties was enough to install
the gear with the bungees and the stop plate at the top of the wing. It
looks like the gear will protrude above the wing about 3 eighths of an inch
without stretching the bungees. Is that the experience others have had?

I installed the AN3 bolts through the bottom bearing with the bolt head on
the outside per normal practice. It appears that the nut end of the bolt
may rub against the bungees. Has anyone put the bolts in backwards with the
nuts on the outside to give the bungees more room?

Jeff,
If you want to keep the bolt heads outside, (my preference) you might
consider making
an 3/16 inch thick bar with threaded holes and place thin radial lock
washers outside.
Fussy work to be sure, but the bungees would not be affected and once a
bolt was in place,
the rest would be easier to do. Originally, I had to make a special
socket and welded handle
with goop to hold onto the individual nylock nuts. Not fun, but it
worked! See link,

Larry,
With several replies to my post in mind, I decided to move the bolt
heads inside (backwards) to make more room for the bungee cords. This
allows the nuts to be inspected during preflight. And it is a bit easier to
install without making a strip. I ended up making a special tool too. I
used some left over tubing from making the compression tool, similar to the
one in your picture, and attached a box end wrench on one side and an open
end wrench on the other. The tubing created a very long extension that
could reach down into the gear box to the nuts. Then I could hold the bolt
head from the top of the gear box and turn the nuts on the outside with a
second wrench. This is, of course, incorrect technique, but with only 20
inch pounds torque required, shouldn't be a problem. When I have to change
the bungees, I'll have to remove the top skin again too. I suspect that
will be some time pretty far into the future from the comments I have heard!
