G'day all,
I would like to finalise cutting the panel and subpanel for my avionics stack, but want to delay the big bucks outlay for my proposed Garmin stack for a few months. Stack configuration is GMA340/GNS430/SL30/GTX327.
Does anyone see any problem with finishing the panel cutting and installing the tubes/racks without having the actual avionics? More importantly, where can you buy the mounting tubes/hardware without buying the avionics?
cheers,
Ron

I did exactly what you are trying to do. I purchased the racks from Straks Avionics and used the Approach Hub to completely wire everything. I then purchased the avionics once I was within couple of months of flying. Gulf Coast Avionics will also sell you the trays.
Check to see how long it will take to get your avionics. Most shops do not keep them in stock.

The mounting tubes/stack comes with each of the devices. Stark may be able to sell them separately. You can mount all of the stacks without the avionics. I got all of my stuff from Stark and they make the cables for each. This is working out real well - all of the device to device connections are made. You still have a lot of work wiring it all to the rest of the airplane.

Hi Ron,
I am using the exact same stack as yours. I am using the radio shop at JAARS to purchase and layout the panel. How are you handling the depth of the GNS430/SL30 in the panel? I want the stack to be exactly in the middle which conflicts with the brace and also the sub-panel is only 10 or so inches from the main panel. I have some thoughts but I would like to hear yours or anyone elses also. Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,
My stack is located just to the right of the F1044 subassy. The sub panel will need to be cut and reinforced per plans 41-3 to accommodate the GNS430 and SL30. Proposed panel attached. If there is not enough space for the EIS in the stack, I will move it under the Copilot MFD.
cheers,
Ron

John Stark does allow you to purchase the radio stack trays and harnesses from him, then credits you for that when you order the actual instruments. The only additional cost is the shipping. Just getting measurements for the height of your stack instruments, however, should be fine. You can make the angle that holds the trays later, or can use radiorax rails. I personally like to have the stack connected to the angle, and fasten it to the panel with screws from the front. This allows you to remove the panel without taking out the radio stack (with all of its wiring going everywhere). The alternative for easy service is to make disconnects coming out the back of the stack, but that is a TON of wires, and a lot of them are shielded (the way Stark wires them up, at least), and I don’t know the ramifications of using a disconnect on a bunch of shielded wires. I would check with Stark on that.
By the way, we use that same stack except the SL40 instead of the SL30, and we are putting the Sorcerer at the bottom of the stack as well. It’s a very good setup.

After over 240 flying hours on N256H, a lot of which has been IFR, including some really hard IFR, we really like having the radio stack to the left of center. It makes it very easy to see and to push buttons when you don’t want to be reaching too far out in turbulence. This also greatly simplifies the installation because of the center rib. Cutting a hole for the stack in the sub-panel is a must. We just reinforced it with aluminum angle on top, bottom and sides, similar to how the plans suggest.
