Could some of you folks that know such things, point me to a couple of
representative pictures of the series 6 and 7 fwf installations? Trying
to see what is different...I found several FWF pictures on the
Sportflight site, but don't know what version I'm looking at.

Jeremy,
The differences are significant.. The Series 7 FWF reduces the installation
time by as much as 60%. The engine also moved forward about 5".

Moving the motor 5" is a VERY SIGNIFICANT change!!! If the C.G. was
close to right before then something else had to move...(battery to the
tail?)

I understand the reasoning for more room behind the engine...the RANS S7
FWF is about 10 pounds of ____ in a 5 pound can...requires a left handed
midget who amputated his pinky and ring finger to get somethings in
there... (Remember the S7 uses the same motor on a firewall about 23"
wide Wink

Just trying to get educated in the ways of Kitfox...history of why
things were changed explains lots of stuff when your building a kit that
is 2 models old.

I think the problem was that the 5,6 with the Rotax was not heavy enough
up front, and it limited how much you could put in the cargo area. The 5
inches made it a better balanced plane, but when I built my 5 with a 7
FWF which I made as light as I could and set the max. weight at 1320, I
decided that I would be better off to use 1 degree of forward wing
sweep. I also put an oversized elevator on for more slow speed
authority. I don't know how much the 1 degree helped as I could roll the
tail wheel before the mains on my standard 7 about as easy as I can with
my 57.

Jeremy,
I have the S-7 firewall forward on my Series 5. Moving the 912S ahead does
move the CG ahead. But that was the purpose! Because the engine is light,
this is needed to allow the full use of the 150 lb capacity of the baggage
area. My plane is light and I established a 16 lb tool kit (that I like to
have anyway) as required equipment. This keeps me in balance when solo with
minimum fuel.

Alan...seems that forward sweep would aggravate an aft CG condition?
Did you mean rearward sweep?

Forward wing sweep does move the center of lift forward and give a
different CG envelope. I did it as I do not intend to use the 150 pound
limit in the cargo compartment and wanted it better balanced for light
operations. Loaded very light without anything in the cargo compartment
puts you forward of or close to the forward limit. My wife can fly it
for fun alone and still get a good flair, or we can load it up and go
camping with a cargo limit of something like 120 pounds in the cargo
bay. I normally do not carry bricks or sacks of cement so that is not a
problem. Like I said, I am not sure it really did much. I can tell you
that when my wife flies the Kitfox, the plane is not the only fox flying.

Anyone who makes such a claim is required to supply photographic evidence
to substantiate it! Wink (Preferably the kind of evidence that leads to
teeth gnashing and shirt rending!)
