I am planning to attend Sun-N-Fun on Sat or Sunday. Is anybody else planning on going? Maybe have another KIS reunion.

Galin,
Wish I could attend but it's been one of those years when nothing has gone right and even my plans to attend Oshkosh this year have been put on hold.
I would appreciate if you would check out any homebuilt aircraft, especially fiberglass planes, with full Vinyl Wraps. I would like to know what you think of the finish and anything you can find out about the installation process. How do the seams look and how about those areas at the edges. I am considering the vinyl wrap for my plane after repeated failures of trying to get a good paint job. The water based paints just aren't working and I can't get the plane to a shop for getting it painted not to mention being able to foot the cost.
Anything you can find out would be helpful.
Thanks,
Bob Reed

Galin,

Roberto, my partner on the KIS TR-4 project, will be at Sun-N-Fun this year with his wife and other Brazilian friend. He will probably contact you.
Are you planning to fly your Cruiser to there?
Best,

Fabricio

OK, will do. The airplanes I have seen that were vinyl wrapped looked very good but they cautioned me to make sure the company has experience wrapping an airplane not just a car. Some of them use propane torches instead of heat guns during the install and this can be a big problem, especially on a fiberglass airplane. Another thing is any imperfection in the fiberglass will be seen through the vinyl so the surface must be almost perfect. They told me those micro holes are not a bit issue but otherwise the surface should be almost ready to paint.

Have you checked with a local corvette shop for hints on painting fiberglass? Corvettes are known for being difficult to paint since they are 99% fiberglass.
Good luck.

I understand they begin to deteriorate in 7 to 10 years. You probably want to keep the plane in a hangar for protection.

You don't wrap an airplane and expect it to last forever, especially for the significantly lower cost. I think it is a good thing. When it is time to replace the wrap, if you want to change your original scheme, you can at a significantly lower cost . If you like the paint scheme, you have the option of wrapping it again or going ahead and painting it.
You don't have that option with a paint job without spending a lot more $$$$.
My 2 cents.

Galin - Fabricio – I am reasonably certain I will be at Sun N Fun later in the week. I will probably be helping Mark K. with his engines in the Ultralight/LSA display area.

Robert – If you are inspired by the recent article in Kitplanes about the wraps one concern I would have, and one that was not discussed in the article is about removing the wrap years down the road. I have a buddy that works in a shop that does wraps on automobiles, and I asked him that question (many years ago) he said they will guarantee a clean removal only on factory painted surfaces. They cannot guarantee the paint will not come off with the wrap on any repainted surfaces. Paint jobs done in the factories are baked on. Finishes we commonly spray on our airplanes are not nearly as durable as finishes done in a huge factory. You would still have to have some kind of fill, and primer on the airplane before you wrap it, but even those finishes may be jeopardized when removing the wrap. My experiences removing the vinyl stripes of my TR-1, even with an industrial heat gun getting it hot enough to almost bubble the paint the surfaces under the paint are still peeling off with the stripes all the way down to the fiberglass weave.

At the airport where my dad, and I kept our airplanes there was a local auto body guy that would come out a shoot the paint on an airplane for a reasonable price. Maybe an ad on craigslist could find someone near you worthy of the task.
