Can anyone help me I have a 582 gray head model 90 that puts out too much volts at low speed I have 14.25 and at high-speed 15.50 I have had this problem before and replace the rectifier and it worked for two years now it is back and the new rectifier did not fix the problem I'm using CPS part #866-080 it's the same as the old one. I have checked grounds and connection can't seem to get it back to the original 13.5 volts . I have a new battery. Can anyone tell me what to look for next,or can the new rectifier-regulator be bad? Thanks for your help. Jerry Kitfox 2

We had the same problem, 15.5 volts with the engine running, 14 volts with the engine off. Turned out it was the meter. If you haven't already, try another meter. Read at the battery with the engine off. It should read 12 volts with a load on it (like nav lights) or maybe 12.5 if it's been recently charged and there is no load on it. With the engine running, measure at the battery and you should get 13.6- 13.8. You might occasionally see 14 volts if the battery was low and the system is charging it vigorously.

Good luck. Hopefully the problem is with the meter and not something else. If you changed the regulator, there isn't much else that could cause a high voltage.

I had problems with the 866-080 regulator shortly after I got my aircraft flying. I changed to the 264-870 regulator (the one with fins on it). It regulates very close to 14 volts at full-throttle, with or without a load on it. It's worked well for about 20 years now.

The literature mentions the 866-080 regulator needs at least a 1A load on it to regulate properly. I found that to be true. So when the battery is fully-charged and not putting a load on the regulator's output, the voltage increases. Putting a load on it drops the voltage somewhat, but it's rather imprecise. However, the 264-870 regulator doesn't have that problem. It regulates properly with no load on it.
