Hi Guys,
I presently have a lock nut "plastic insert" holding the main nose gear bolt on. My question, is this ok to use? Any other suggestions??
Thanks!
Steve

No. Use a castellated nut with a stainless cotter pin.

Are you talking about the large nut that holds the nose wheel fork onto to front gear leg? If so, should be a castellated nut with cotter pin.

If you are talking about the bolt through the axel, then a nylock nut with proper thread showing is probably okay, that is the way mine was drawn and constructed, and has been fine for ~150 hours flight time.

Drill a hole yourself and bevel it.

Bill schertz is correct. The nut on the bottom of the pivot point must be castellated but the nut for the axle bolt can be a locknut according to the manual. I believe I drilled this bolt to take a castellated nut also just to be on the safe side.
Thanks Bill.

Hello Steve, You wrote:

1) " I presently have ......"

Please --- first thing when you post, it would be appreciated if you would
identify the kind of KIS airplane that you are asking a question about.
Either KIS TR-1 or KIS 4 place should get us in the right ball park to
answer your question(s).

2) ".... holding the main nose gear bolt on."

The main landing gear is back under the wing. The nose landing gear is
forward under the engine. I assume that your question relates to the nose
landing gear.

The nose wheel and tire is contained within an aluminum shoe or cradle that
swivels about a short vertical stub at the bottom end of the nose landing
gear in order to steer the aircraft with differential braking during
taxiing. At the very bottom of that vertical stub is a 3/4 inch by 16
threads per inch threaded portion. A compatible 3/4- 16 nut and some washers
are used to retain the aluminum shoe.

3) "I presently have a lock nut "plastic insert" holding the main nose gear
bolt on. My question, is this ok to use?"

Absolutely not.

4) "Any other suggestions??"

You must use a castle nut such as a AN310-12 or (more likely) a thin castle
nut AN320-12 in combination with a cotter key and washers to retain the
aluminum shoe and not an elastic stop nut. Here is why:

A) Elastic stop nuts are not to be used in any situation where there is
rotation about the bolt, stud, or threaded stub where a nut is used because
it is possible for the nut to back off. Here is an extract from paragraph
7-64 in <<
http://www.faa.gov/documentlibrary/media/advisory_circular/ac_43.13-1b_w-chg1.pdf
>>

"Two types of self-locking nuts are currently in use, the all-metal type,
and the fiber or nylon type.

a. DO NOT use self-locking nuts on parts subject to rotation.

b. Self-locking castellated nuts with cotter pins or lockwire may be used in
any system."

B) In this case the nut provides two very important functions: It keeps the
aluminum shoe, nose wheel, and tire from falling off the nose landing gear;
and It provides the friction that keeps the nose wheel from shimmying, a
very critical function since nose wheel shimmy can become violent enough to
rip the nose landing gear strut right off the fire wall.

C) I won't go into detail here on the techniques and washers, either
Belleville or nylon, that are used in conjunction with the castle nut and
cotter key to maintain proper nose landing gear friction because there has
been some recent info exchanged on that subject and I will either repost it
or forward it to you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
