Can anyone tell me where I can get a new gear leg for a T. R. 1, please . Mine is original (1992) and now needs to be replaced, I think they brought out a modified one in 1993 which was a lot stronger. Thanks Malcolm (G-OKIS)

The original TR1 nose gear was
Streamline tubing that had disastrous results. The later nose gear was round and much stronger. Lyle Hendricks I believe makes them.

The reason for the nose gear issues are not really due to it's strength. Actually not at all. They are due to the main gear being too far back and this puts far too much load on the nose gear. As designed and as most people have built the KIS aircraft, the load on the nose gear is almost the same as that on one main tire. Normal design practice would have the nose gear at about 10% of the total weight not 33%. Most design texts say from a minimum of 5% (at max aft CG) to maximum of 20%. Some aircraft even have restricted GC at higher gross weights to help reduce the load on the nose wheel.
I also prefer to see a slightly longer main gear to have the aircraft sit slightly nose down. This helps reduce the chance of landing nose gear first. The nose gear is not at all for landing. Ever. It is only for holding the nose off the ground when going slow or stopped.

That is true Mark but there was a design issue in the nose gear also. I had
the one where there were two triangular flat plate gussets welded to the
tube at the top of the gear, to add stiffness. The welds created a stress
point that caused the tube to crack and fail. I was lucky and found it
before it broke. I know of at least two that weren’t so lucky. I am sure the
excess weight on the nose gear hasened the failure,so we need a more robust
nose gear.
