Bud and I modified my Classic wings in order to install wingtip lights two years ago.
It involved boring a hole in front of the spar to the wingtip.
We acquired a length of steel tubing sufficient to extend from root to tip, plus a couple of feet. One end was ground with (many) wedge cuts around the end which were then sharpened with a grinder, forming sharp teeth.
With the wing on a trestle we used three sawhorses to support the length of the tube on the level of the spar. This must be done accurately. The cut was begun about a foot forward of the spar angling to meet the spar at the tip exactly. The boring tool was rotated by clamping a large vise grip to the end and rotating the tool while keeping the pressure constant. The tool must be withdrawn periodically to clear the foam which will clog the tool. The alignment, both horizontally and vertically must be continually checked.
This is a procedure requiring two people, one to rotate and the other to help push and to spell the person rotating the tool. Not least, the second set of eyes is essential to ensure accuracy.
This takes several hours. Be careful.
Our first hole was spot on. The second was angled a bit aft and encountered the spar a few inches inboard the tip. Humbling, but not a killer.
Constant attention to alignment is essential, the long tube is flexible and must be supported along its length, hence the necessity for the multiple sawhorses for accurate support.
Good luck.

Additionally, if you are, indeed bringing the aircraft to North America, I suggest boring the hole, then installing the elt and lights upon arrival. Lights are required for night operations only, and US elt requirements are for either a 121.5 or a 406mhz unit. Each is probably more readily sourced in the US.

Hello Graeme,

As Tim said a snug fit, I fit mine fully home with a nudge from the
palm of my hand and to remove I use a Trowel inserted between
the fuselage and the tailplane to leverage clear of the drive pins.
Works well.

Robert - I believe I remember hearing that some hardy soul has installed tip lights
as a retrofit to a Classic wing. I think this was done by boring a very long
hole through the blue foam. However, I dont think its a practical possibility
in the XS wing - there is too much internal structure to get through. You
can see how I did the conduit for tip strobes on my XS wings, before closing the
top skin, at:

http://www.rowlandcarson.org.uk/aviation/europa_435/trystbdcond.php

and

http://www.rowlandcarson.org.uk/aviation/europa_435/conduitinstall.php

and these pictures show how difficult it would be to retrofit wiring from root
to tip.

If you have Classic wings, you may have a chance to get the wiring through - best
of luck. I hope that the person who did it before might pop up here with some
suggestions!

Kingsley - Im sorry you have not been able to renew your membership. The message
you are getting shows that the connexion between the website and the MySQL server
is not working. The Committee are in process of moving the website to a
new host with better facilities. One reason for the move is that some of the pages
and facilities on the present website are not functioning. Tim Houlihan &
I thought we had deleted or disabled all the broken links but obviously we have
failed to find the one you used.

Would you please let me know exactly where the broken link is? It would be great
if you could send a screenshot of where you click to get that error message.
If you cant easily capture a screenshot, then a description of the route from
the club front page would help. It would be good if you could send the info direct
to rowlandcarson(at)gmail.com rather than to the Matronics list, please.

Phil,

Just curious:

How do you do "engine mapping" in a 912uls which has carburetors, not fuel injection,
and no electronic ignition, but rather a fixed wheel providing timing?

Hi Kingsley,

I tried emailing you directly yesterday, but for some reason it bounced. It then
struck me that you might not be the only person experiencing problems and the
information may be of use to others, so I'm posting my response to the forum.
Hope it helps.

........... and while I have everyone's attention, if anybody has some nicely framed
high resolution pictures of Europas, Europa builds, Europa social gatherings
Europa flyins (basically anything that represents Europa ownership) that
we can use copyright free on the new site, I would be pleased to receive them
(email address below).
Thanks

Hi Kingsley,

I spotted your post on Matronics and thought I'd respond directly.

We are in the process of upgrading the website completely, creating new content

Subject: RE: Arplast PV50

Hi Pat,
If you have the money then an Airmaster prop is one of the best on the
market that is still in production.Unfortunately the makers of the Arplast
PV50 prop are no longer trading so getting spares has become very difficult.
The Smart Avionics controller is very good and if you can get your hands on
a second hand unit then go for it. It is a better unit than the old one
that you had. The Smart Controller is much more sophisticated and does much
more for you than your original manual unit, and it does not rely on
internal rechargeable batteries. It also controls the pitch automatically
rather than manually. Unfortunately, as you have discovered, Smart Avionics
are no longer making this unit. (due probably to Arplast going out of
production)

Re the indicated pitch, with your unit, the numbers mean nothing, as they
are entirely dependent upon the position of the sensing arm on the position
transmitter potentiometer spindle. The indicated range from fine to coarse
is also a variable dependant on the setup of this same potentiometer.
Adjustment of the range of movement from coarse to fine is achieved by
adjusting the limit microswitches on the prop pitch change screw jack.

Fine pitch should be adjusted such that on the ground (a/c stationary) with
WOT you achieve around 5,300 rpm. This will give you about 5750 rpm at 65
to 70 kts ie
you are safe to t/off, clean up and start climb before worrying about
exceeding you max allowable rpm.

The coarse pitch limit will give you about a 10 degree pitch increase from
fine and should allow you to climb at a minimum ROC of 300ft/min and say 65
kts, at max wt. This covers the go around situation with the prop remaining
in coarse by accident or prop malfunction

I could ramble on but I won't unless you have any further questions.
