Hi All,

I'm looking for advice on installation of a landing light, for a Classic. I have my eyes on an Aveo Vega TL (http://www.aveoengineering.com/vega-tl-tlr/)

Does anyone have experience of this?

I'm thinking of installing it under the wing, and running the wires down the tube for the aileron push rod, before turning it downwards to emerge from the bottom of the wing. Or, attaching it under the fuselage on the passenger side (away from the exhaust).

Just looking for opinions and/or experiences.

Best

Jon

If you are under the LAA in UK you will
Need a MOD. My MOD puts it in the air intake under the prop (XS cowling).

(at)Graham,

I'm not under the LAA scheme, therefore MOD approval isn't an issue for me.

In general, though, how do you find the Vega? Would you recommend it?

Hi all,

The best position for a landing light seems to me somewhere on (under ?)
the left wing, so it is very helpful for the pilot to judge flaring
height in the dark.
Some put them under the cowl, but we usually lose sight of the beam at
the exact moment we would find it useful.

Jon if you send me an email to Spcialeffects(at)aol.com i will send you a photo of my landing lights. I am building a classic (foam wings) mono wheel and have incorporated them into the outrigger speed fairings.

I have a preference for the Vega as a landing light. Initially thought of 2 off, 1 per wing. However, they are massively expensive (Spruce quote $425 USD) - therefore one only could be mounted under the chin intake. I drew up a fairing which aligns the beam to about 5 deg down based on landing config alpha.

The idea was to have the moulding 3D printed (cost around £50 each) and hand finish to match the plane.

We could progress this as a Std Mod if enough interest. ALso we may be able to get a better price for 5off or 10off 'bulk' purchase.

Maybe discuss at the AGM (if the clouds clear and ceiling improves- currently <1200ft in Essex).

Hi,

I've just fitted a powerful 3480 lumen LED landing light to the cowl of my Europa (G-URMS). It's powerful enough to light-up an unlit runway at dusk/night. It is very similar to the expensive LED lights available from the various aircraft parts suppliers, but it's designed for cars/trucks, so it's much, much cheaper. I bought it from Australia and with shipping it came to about £80. It has been inspected and approved by the LAA. The LAA mod number is 14394.

I can send you pictures if required.

Regards
Carl

P.S I've attached some pictures and the doc describing the fitting.

The installation looks interesting but raises a few questions about efficiency of cooling air flow. Is there a moulded cover on the inside? Does it reduce the cruise speed (a Go-Pro sized camera on mine reduces the cruise by a noticeable amount).

Did the LAA approve the Mod without any supporting stress calcs?

My scheme does not involve making a sizable hole in the cowling - just a 1/2 dia hole for the cables, sealed with silicon. The light and moulded support sit around 2.5in max off the OML.

Hi John,

Good questions.

The body of the light is designed as a heat sink and as such has channels through it for the air to pass through. These are aligned with the flow of air into the cowl, providing minimal reduction in flow.

I can't say I have noticed a reduction in the cruise speed. I'm burning about 15 liters per hour at 110 kts.

The LAA didn't require any stress calculations as this is not a load bearing part of the cowl, and the metal bracket helps reinforce the area in any case. The mod number is 14394.

Regards
Carl
