Took my 13 year old granddaughter for a ride in the MKIII this morning. We had been talking about her getting some flying lessons and she was pretty interested, she asked a lot of questions about the airplane and how it worked. I did the usual this-is-how-it-works thing, and we took off. I got her over the highway that runs to her house and showed her the basics of how to keep a heading and airspeed, she wasn't great, but probably typical.

After flying over her house, she was still having trouble figuring out why airspeed was important, so we climbed up 3,000, and I showed her what an approach to a stall was, and then a mild stall. Eyes got big...
Then I gave it back to her and we headed back to the strip, she did much better with the headings and airspeeds.

One of my better landings, taxied back and shut everything down. She announced with a big grin "Wow; I just had my first driving lesson and it wasn't even in a car!"

It was a great day.

Good for you, Grand Pa.

Always enjoy introducing children for their first flight. They, for the
most part, always enjoy it. Maybe not at first until they find out that
everything is going to be ok. Then they lighten up and really get into
flying. After the first one it is difficult to keep them out of the
cockpit.

Had a friend's young son and daughter that were not cut out for flight.
Both talked big on the ground, but in the air they were devastated. Had to
make highly modified circuit and get them on the ground quick.
