I thought it might be of interest if we put together a post of who has nev's cowls, what engine mount was used and what engine. The reason I thought this might be a good idea is that when I was fitting mine there was a lot of ''fettling'' needed and when I did spoke with nev he was always waiting on someone to send him photos. Also I think I am the only person installing a rotax 914. So I'll start

Engine : Rotax 914 turbo

Engine mount: Europa

I fitted Nevs Cowlings, with his help the week before he passed away.
I have the original engine mount with a 912ULS.
No problems fitting.
Nev provided templates for baffling but individual set ups need some modification.

I have Nev's cowlings with his engine mount, on a 912s on a EUROPA Motorglider.
Still struggling to make the cooler ducts fit the cowl. Trial and error but I might have cut too much off.
I do have cardboard templates available once I get it right.

Hi DavidI have Nev's cowls and mount
Fitted to G-MLXP Rotax 912S
All works great for me no overheating probs whatsoever
Cooling ducts need to be fitted and altered for each installation
I have Graham's fire wall not the stainless steel one. So may be different to others

Hi Frank,

I completed fitting Nev's cowlings in February and they have solved the overheating problems I was experiencing with a 912ULS in a Classic cowl. I also fitted his engine bearer frame and the weight and balance done after completing everything gave a result that was almost 3 lbs lighter. The old Classic double silencer system was heavy!

At Nev's suggestion I wrote out some guidance for others who also bought his marvellous creation and sent them to a couple of other customers. I've no idea whether anyone made much use of them, but pm me if you want a copy.

Donald Cameron kindly let me see photos of his Nev Eyre cowls fully installed, which I found really useful.

Engine : Rotax 912ULS

Hi Jonathan. I think where I had difficulty was the fact that I didn't use his frame and the fact that he supplied me with a heat exchanger and not an oil cooler. His instructions for routing the plumbing didnt work out around the Europa engine frame and getting the water hoses to and from the heat exchanger required holes to be cut in the ducting support brackets which mount to the firewall. Also my radiator is quite large and the inlet and outlets come through the sides of the ducting under the engine and not out the top as per Europa design. Anyway it's all fitted now and hope to have no issues with overheating like you. On a final note Donald was also kind enough to talk with me over the phone about his experiences which helped.

For some reason this original post did not reach me - I’ve only seen replies to it. Anyway, here is my contribution.

There are pictures of Neville with one of his cowls fitted to an anonymous tri-gear with his own engine mount on the Europa Club website at:

NB I note that the webmaster will need to amend the text of that page in the the light of Neville’s untimely death, not to mention getting the spelling of his name right - but he has been rather busy getting new content management tools and hosting arrangements in place recently.

I have an XS kit and am installing a Rotax 912S with a Woodcomp high-twist variable-pitch prop. From my conversations with Neville, it sounds as though I am the only one fitting his cowl with a Woodcompp prop. I am using the standard Europa factory mount and firewall (although I am having trouble getting that to fit - it looks as though it would be much easier if I could get one of Graham Singleton’s composite firewalls - anyone want to take over manufacture of them?).

I persuaded Neville to cut out & fold for me the horizontal baffles that separate the upper & lower parts of the cowl, and also to supply new side pieces for the duct underneath the engine that houses the radiators. (The standard factory items could have been extended to fit his cowl, but I felt it was nicer to have one-piece duct sides.) The aft part of the baffle I designed and made myself following instructions from Neville, as he only had templates for that to suit his own engine mount.

LAA mod 13452 refers to G-RICS which has an Airmaster prop and a 912S. I think it is using the standard Europa factory engine mount. It appears to be a conventional taildragger.

I am active with Jag regarding Nev's cowl moulds and am going to help him with the layup of the cowls. In fact I asked the question of the number of layers of bid. I think it is probably 2 with reinforcements in certain critical areas.

Phil - glad to hear you are working with Jag. I promised I would bring some of the offcut trimmed from the edge from my cowl to the LAA Rally and/or the Europa Club dinner so that Jag could see how thick it is. As you say, there will be extra plies in some more high-stressed areas but I can’t speak to that. Would pictures of the inside of the cowl be useful? Enough of the layup structure might be visible from the inside (which has no paint or gel-coat). For instance, have a look at:

Hi RowlandI worked with Nev on the original submissions to the LAA, Nev told me that he had given them chapter and verse in the number of ply's and orientation of them.
My involvement was mainly on the engine mount but I did supply Nev with templates for the radiator baffles. I think you should contact Andy Draper at the Laa for details of the layups

I had a phone call recently from Jag Chaggar. He says he has acquired the moulds for Neville’s cowl and wondered if I had any idea how many layers of layup were needed on them. I think he has a 914 installation, on an airframe imported from USA, but I’m not sure if he is on this forum.

LAA mod 13452 refers to G-RICS which has an Airmaster prop and a 912S. I think it is using the standard Europa factory engine mount. It appears to be a conventional taildragger.

I will probably be going to the rally Saturday so can see you for a chat.
Those details you mentioned would be most useful . I will also study my xs cowling as there shouldn't be much difference. The weight after all will be the critical consideration. Thank you very much for your reply.

Phil - glad to hear you are working with Jag. I promised I would bring some of the offcut trimmed from the edge from my cowl to the LAA Rally and/or the Europa Club dinner so that Jag could see how thick it is. Hello All. Someone contacted me to request a copy of the guidance notes which I wrote for the fitting the cowls. He stated a reason for installing them is that they'll afford a 10 knot speed increase. I don't know where that idea came from, but I can assure everyone that I haven't seen a single knot of speed gain in the cruise.

Maybe there's some wishful thinking, which associates Nev's LoPresti style air intakes with cowls having proper LoPresti design fitted to other aircraft types and thus reducing cooling drag. I don't know!

My reason for fitting them as a direct replacement for my old Classic cowls was to improve cooling and overcome hot starting problems. This goal was achieved admirably and they look good too!

Just wanted to say that i acquired Nevilles master set of moulds for his revised cowling (the ones shown on the EC website under 'Cowl and Cooling) - from Jagjit Chaggar a few weeks ago.

I can’t comment on the mounting frame nor do I have details about the baffles - though I believe that you are perhaps one of the best informed people about them (you have a set? - from which cardboard templates are/can be made for at least one frame/engine/prop combination)?

Clive - you’re correct, I have no need of them myself - I was just fishing!

I have paper templates for the side baffles (and the actual baffles of Neville’s making), plus a card template for the aft baffle that I worked up to fit the factory engine mount and my own firewall layout.

Sounds as though no-one is going to take on the manufacture of Neville’s mount.

Looks like I am about to start on completing another aged part built kit which has an 912 and original cowl, engine mount and exhaust system. Any comments on this set up appreciated.
Will cooling be an issue? Can it be fixed with additional rads etc. My current 912S and XS FWFWD runs too cool for 95% of the year. When I was building my first classic I was recommended to go XS and brought a new cowl, and engine mount but then I hadn't purchased them yet.

What about Nev's cowl and mount - would that have substantial advantages?
Looks like removing the lower cowl on the old classic means removing radiators or at least the attachment bolts.

The kit currently as a brand new radio K97A and transponder Garmin GX320; is there anywhere in the world where they would still be useful?

Graeme, I found ebay uk to be very useful in selling the old avionics from my aircraft. I originally priced them slightly above what I thought they were worth, and if they didn't sell after 10 days, reduced the prices a bit at a time, until they found their market value. It can take some time to sell the bits, but a good way to get a fair price if you're in no rush. There is no charge unless the items sell. If I remember correctly, radio went to USA, and Transponder to Australia !
