Hi All

I am just about to tackle fitting the doors.

After reading the build manual 12 times and Bud's excellent 'Door Fitting' article several times, I am pretty sure I know what I need to achieve.

However, a couple of questions before I set to it with the Permagrit block:
1. What sort of gap am I trying to get between the door flange and the fuselage recess? A mixing stick? or a bit more?
2. Is it a good idea to slightly round off and lose the sharp edge off the inner and outer edges of the door flange to prevent paint flaking and chipping?

Also, I am assuming that all door fitting is completed before fitting any door seals.

You are correct in your assumptions. The gap on the sides and bottom is what folks look at. For initial fitting, the sides can be a popsicle stick. Final prior to paint should be 1/8 inch for primer and paint. Do round off slightly the sharp edges prior to final prime and paint. I like 1/8 all around the sides and sill on final finish for esthetics, but just make it even.

The top has to allow full clearance of the curve. The tabs on the side can be tight at 3/32" after hinges are finalized. Of course the tab has to be fitted to the rebate. Some require a 3/8" gap sanded to clear for paint on full opening.

Have fun make it fit perfectly now and it pays dividends later on.

Thanks Bud

Having yours and Nev's advice, hints and tips next to the build manual chapter always gives me that extra confidence to get started and get the job done.

I don't know how many are still building here in the UK and elsewhere but the number is getting smaller for sure.

It is the advice and encouragement from yourself and others on this forum that helps get us 'long time builders' closer to our own first flights.

Many thanks.

Hello Kelvin, I am not an expert at doing things right like Bud and Nev. Rather, my claim to fame rests on finding myself at the butt end of everything the Europa can throw at you. So for what it's worth, have a look at my blog:

Hopefully that helps a bit in avoiding pitfalls!

Thanks Jeroen

I have already viewed your pictures. I keep a good eye on various builders blogs - yours included and always have a good look around all the sites before I start the next bit of the project.

One of the advantages of being a late builder is that I have got the benefit of all the experiences of those that have gone before.

The down side is that there are no excuses for building it badly!!!!

A picture saves a thousand words as they say.

Many thanks for sharing your pictures. I have taken many but just not found the time to upload them - I will get around to it one day.

Should you run into the same problem with the lugs that I had, is still have enough of the aluminium (2024, aircraft grade) to make a set of brackets. I 'll be happy to send it to you if you need it.
