Well, yesterday was Weight and Balance Day, otherwise known as "No More Donuts For you Day"

The Kolb factory website says that a stock "per plans" Firestar 2 should weigh approx. 325 pounds. I am guessing that this figure is pretty optimistic and definitely bare bones, pull start engine, tiny tires, etc.

Mine has heavy wall steel tube, extra long main gear legs, brakes, and giant 22 inch bush tires, plus my HKS engine is 20 pounds more than the 2-strokes like the 503. My aircraft came in at 389 pounds empty, with no gas or oil, and without a battery.

With 10 gallons of fuel, a gallon of oil, a 12AH sealed battery, and my fat butt in the seat it will be within 20 or 30 pounds of the max gross weight (725 lb. per plans).

The CG worked out to be about 28% of wing chord, but this is speculative. The Kolb plans say the wing chord is 64 inches, but the Firestatr only has that much chord for the outer half of the wing... the inboard half of chord is 53 inches, which would effectivey put the CG further aft.

Considering that the usual "elliptical lift distribution" means that the inboard half of the wingspan is doing much more of the work than the outboard half, logic tells us that the "chord" we choose to use for W&B should be the inboard half. But the CG of my aircraft is within the published (and presumably accurate) limits whichever "chord" you use for your calculations.

GeorgeI have a pitot tube from ACSpruce
that is made of plastic and the tube holder is threaded. It
is  made so that you can remove the pitot tube to keep a
knucklehead from brushing against it breaking it. I took a
piece of alum. flat stock and bent it to accommodate the
holder for the virb. That point is the least amount of
vibration in the plane. Not sure if it works for you or not,
but it does for me.Larry

Hey
Larry, thanks for taking us along. I wish that I could get
my virb elite to record as smoothly as
yours. George

I decided to go flying
today, so recorded my flight. Unfortunately I foolishly
uploaded an update to my Virb program and it will not
display the normal speed, altitude, track and the other stuff
that I liked so well. Every time they have an update, I lose
something else that I liked about the camera.
