Rotax requires a rubber replacement at 5 years for their 912 engines. Coolant, oil and fuel lines, carburetor diaphragms, flanges , etc. They also want the fuel pump replaced after 5 years. Also, my engine mounts are about 9 years old. (Have about 60 running hours on them over the last 5 years). They seem OK but wondered if I should go ahead and replace them. Any comments appreciated.

I've had good luck with my three 912 series engines. Never let me down
since 1993 and about 3200 hours. Only time I ever had one quit on me was
landing at Toad River, BC. Was determined the idle jets iced up from a long
slow approach down the mountain side to the gravel strip. Weather was
perfect for carb ice.

This last 912ULS I changed out the coolant hoses around 5 or 6 years. Used
locally procured Gates hose rather than spend all that money for Rotax
hoses. Engine oil hoses are super high quality silicone with the blue
outside cover. They have been on their since my first 912ULS around 2000.
They are steel braid reinforced. No problem with degradation of the
interior of the oil hoses.

Used to change out a lot of the other rubber stuff, carb diaphragms, etc.,
but haven't bothered with this last engine I mounted in 2007. I do keep my
eyes on the carb sockets to insure they are not cracking. If I see a crack
or feel they need changing, I change them. This last time I changed them
with JBM sockets. I see they want 76.00 a piece for them now, three times
more than the two stroke sockets. ??? Hope I don't have to replace the
ones I have, but they have lasted much longer for me than Rotax sockets.

While I am at it I may as well share my feelings for Rotax oil filters at
25.00 a pop, last time I looked. I have used Fram (oh my God!) Tough Guard
TG-3614 oil filters since day one on all my 912's, about 5.00 a pop. They
do a good job for me.

I wouldn't tell anyone to not follow procedures established by Rotax for 912
maintenance, I don't recommend anyone doing as I do, but that is the way I
do it with pretty good success.

Depends on how you view maintenance, I guess. If you have an SLSA and its
maintenance manual says "service per Rotax", you're stuck with the schedule
AND what you can use in the way of parts. Anything other than Rotax or A/C
manufacturer supplied parts have to have a letter of authorization. The
same would apply I believe if you bought a 912 S instead of the ULS and you
wanted to keep it "certified".
As for what to use if it's your option I highly recommend Silicone hose for
all the coolant lines. Pegasus Racing and others have it in metric and inch
sizes. You buy it once.
Orings and such can be had at McMaster Carr but you'll have to buy in qty
50 or 100. Usually for half what Rotax charges for 1. So you pay less AND
get a lifetime supply. :-}
I went through Rotax 2 and 4 stroke schools in 2007 so I've had a chance to
test this out for the last 11 years. If you rub in a coat of good ole white
lithium grease on hoses, orings and carb sockets they last longer. How much
longer I can't say without knowing your aircraft's environment. For me,
with a hangar, I know it's at least twice as long as stored samples that
dried out.

John and Rick, thanks for your comments. Working now on getting the parts together. Will replace stuff in November. Need to get the BRS repacked and probably a new rocket at the same time. Do not archive.
