I recently bought a Firestar 2 from a fellow in Oxford Kansas. This plane was once owned by Gilpen, I hope I spelled his name correct. I will remove the skins and do what repairs are needed. There is a broken weld in the fuselage were the second seat lower bar would mount. After stripping the plane I will weld that cross member. There was a bunch of damage to the rudder, I finished that today, pics to follow.

The plane as I bought it, it came with a trailer in the background.

The damage to the tail.

The repair.

This is the vertical fin. I have not seen one like this, has anyone?

Today I removed the vertical and horizontal stabilizers, I also removed the elevator and all remaining brackets from the rear of the boom. Of coarse this is what she looks like now.

If I recall correctly, there was a lower horizontal cross member that tended to break, and Kolb said to cut it, because if it didn't break, it caused something else to break. Some sort of stress problem. Anyway, we took a a Dremel tool and cut the one in Ed's FSII in half, never had a problem.
I'll call Vince after a bit and see if he remembers.

Anyway, don't weld it just yet, wait for some list feedback. Or call Bryan at Kolb.

Edit - Talked to Vince, between us we both got the memory banks back on line - There are two lower tubes that run horizontally at the back side of the cockpit, one is the tube that goes between the lower landing gear leg sockets, that one needs to be in good shape!
Just ahead of that is the cross member tube that would normally go under the passenger's tailbone, and the passenger seat bottom fabric would attach to it. If that is the one you referred to, it needs to be either cut or removed. Since yours is already broken, probably just remove it.

I have to fix it. The bar that is broken is the bar that the pilot seat back rest on.

Roger that! That is not the one I am referring to, the one that needs to be cut is several inches lower and about 14" further back. Call Kolb and ask them.

I removed the engine. Next I will be removing the stuff in the fuselage, then the fuselage will be loaded in my truck for a trip to my house where the welding equipotent is.

I will be rebuilding this motor. The oil system will be removed, do not trust them.

I’m always surprised when someone says they don’t trust the oil injection system. It has been around since the seventies on my Yamahas and the 503 on my FS2 had over 700hrs on it using the system. I considered it the one most important advance in two stroke technology, greatly reducing carbon build up by varying oil % with changing engine loads. When we mix, we must blend for max conditions, making it way rich for cruise power settings, causing carbon build and ring sticking which causes piston seizures. Gotta have a little faith in the technology guys.

The wife & I rode 2-stroke dirt bikes with oil injection all through the 70's and 80's, and the only time we ever had an oil problem was:

A. I was at my folks house and noticed I was really low on oil, so my dad dumped in a can of the synthetic oil he used in his outboard motor. My trusty Yamaha CT175 seized up about a half mile from home. That was when I learned you NEVER go from dinosaur to synthetic or vice versa w/o purging the system first.

B. Same Yamaha 5 years later, wife was riding it in the woods about 5 miles from the house and it seized because a branch fouled the oil line and yanked it off the pump. Relating that to aircraft applications - you need more altitude.

I like oil injection.

i had an old hodaka road toad. and yes I did depend on the oil feed, until I found myself building the engine because of lack of oil in the fuel. It is just one more thing that will break if left on.

I stripped the fuselage down, all but the seat.

then I took the fuselage home and welded the broken tube.

Now letting the paint stripper do its job. If I cannot remove the paint with this stuff, out comes the wire wheel.

Does anyone know where the serial number is stamped on this thing, I cannot find it?

If I remember, the serial number should be stamped on the end plate at the rear of the engine mount tube.

In my day the serial number is on the plans set. I’ve built two different Kolbs and neither had a stamped frame. I stamp all that information on the data plate that I installed upon completion.

If you can find original plans, it the plans number. Like mine is FS100. The 100th original Firestar.
