Since I dont have an oil filter, I will be doing the oil change at 25 hrs.

Do I need to remove all the screens? or which ones are required to be inspected?

As a safety measure, at every oil change I remove all my oil screens, rinse with avgas, blow dry with compressed air, visually inspect, reinstall and safety back into place.It's tedious but time well spent!

A 10 micron oil filte will greatly extend the time between overhauls. I seen this not only my M-14p but on the B-24s PW1830 and B-17s W-1820s. I had over 1800 hours on my M-14 before I did a zero overhaul. I had done 2 top overhauls during that time. When we opened her up, she still looked clean in side. Most of the time I'd do oil changes at the 40 hours mark. On the B-17 & B-24 we change engines at around 1200 hours. On those engines not only fine oil filters but the way we ran them. During the war they were happy to get 400 hours on an engine. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby

Justin,
For years, I’ve been using the Cross 10 micron filter with the spin-on firewall mounted oil filter kit from Craig Payne.

With respect to your latest post... You need to invest in a spin on oil filter AND a maintenance manual. The filter is probably the most cost effective improvement you can do to your engine. A manual will help you properly maintain your airplane and probably answer 90% of the questions you post.

Justin, The common theroy is that any particulats in these engines over 25 microns in size cause engine wear. Therefore if you put a 10 micron filter to catch those larger particulats coming OUT of the engine, the whole system stays pretty clean. It is surprising too, how much dirty air these engine breath. Thus putting a airfilter on the carb intake is an excellent idea. The sand - and thats what most of it is, has more cutting power -if you will- then the carbon from combustion. Another choise is the oil you use. I use a detergent oil. This keeps sluge from building up in passage ways and restricting flow.

Pappy;

Actually you are using an AD or Ashless Dispersant oil which has a similar cleaning effect.
Automotive detergent oils can cause pre-ignition in air cooled engines which do not cool as uniformly as liquid. They are not approved for use in an aircraft engine.

Cheers;
Walt

Justin;

Speaking of safety measures using avgas (or any gasoline) as a cleaning agent is not a good idea. Actually it is a very bad idea! Invest in a 5 gal. pail of petroleum solvent for that purpose. Each oil company has it’s own name, the most common being “Varsol” from Imperial (now Exxon I think).

Do I need to remove all the screens? or which ones are required to be inspected?

I typically use Stoddard solvent for general cleaning when a petroleum product is involved, tho the Chinese Maint Manual instructs to use avgas then air for cleaning the oil screens.Think Stoddard would be better?

Yes. I’m sure Stoddard is the same as Varsol. It will not evaporate and leave dirt on the part like gas and is much safer.

Of course it is a flammable fluid and should be treated as such, for example disconnecting the battery, removing trouble lights, etc. or any potential ignition source particularly when using a spray gun.

Stay safe.

Walt, Right on.
I use AeroShell 100 plus. I quit using multi grade because I always seem to get oil leaks!.. We went to using single grade on the bombers too for the same reason. Plus its was cheaper.

Pull the main oil screen on the firewall, the capillary screen for the prop, and the sump/chip detector.

Pappy, is there any issue in changing from multi grade to the Aeroshell 100p plus? I thought I had read that changing from one to the other could cause flaking of particulates in the engine etc.
Thanks,
Gil
