For sale:
a Soviet artificial horizon I picked up used years ago, but never plugged it in. No need for me to keep it. Stored in a sealed bag.
Think I gave $150 for it, asking same + shipping to you.
Selling as-is, I've never seen it work but no reason to believe it doesn't. Anyone need it?

Russian AI’s operate on 36 bolts AC, 400 Hz and require an inverter to power them. They are designed for aerobatics and therefore can and do tumble during aerobatics. They have no caging capability during aerobatics.Dennis

Dennis, why did they choose 36 volts AC, 400Hz? It is such a heavy and complex method, although does seem to work well.

I can only guess. Many military aircraft in the past have equipment that operate on AC, 400 hz. Probably for reliability and longevity. Remember who designed the 52. Yakovlev was primarily a military aircraft designer. Also remember where the 52 was originally used. Thus the ruggedness and durability.

That’s my best guess.

Most military and commercial aircraft use 115 VAC 3 phase at 400 Hz for weight saving purposes, which makes no sense at all until you learn that the amount of iron you need (mass) in a transformer core gets smaller in size as the frequency of the voltage increases. The same is true in any magnetic Flux field device such as a motor. This fact is also the basic principle and reason for switching power supplies versus linear power supplies.

And I never answered the direct question asked! My bad, sorry.

The Russions were very big on designing one general purpose device and then using it anywhere and everywhere else they could, instead of designing all new "devices" for any new aircraft. Hence the generator being rated at 100 amps (at) 28 VDC (with forced cooling air flow) on a Yak 52 or Sukhoi 26, 29, 31 that needed only about 1/3 of that worst case!
Attitude Gyro same thing. It was used on many other aircraft, including for a large part those that were running 3 phase 115 volt primary power, I.E. as Dennis mentioned "military aircraft"  Thus they put the same old gyro in Yaks, but then had to create AC energy with the inverter, which in most cases was actually just a motor driven AC generator.

Even their Jets use 36v. The L-39 has two 3 X 36V inverters

Russian AI’s operate on 36 bolts AC, 400 Hz and require an inverter to power them. They are designed for aerobatics and therefore can and do tumble during aerobatics. They have no caging capability during aerobatics.Dennis

Objet : Re: Soviet Art Horizon for sale...

For sale:
a Soviet artificial horizon I picked up used years ago, but never plugged it in. No need for me to keep it. Stored in a sealed bag.
Think I gave $150 for it, asking same + shipping to you.
Selling as-is, I've never seen it work but no reason to believe it doesn't. Anyone need it?
