Was in Harbor Freight yesterday and spotted an el cheapo
wire stripper that was interesting. This QUINN product uses
a solid rivet in the pivot point and a handier travel
stop to set wire gage.
Bought one and hauled it home. Does a really nice job
and with the solid shaft, more likely to stay tight
with age/use.
The el-Cheeso design has been around for decades and
I have a few of them . . . which I'm going to pitch
and replace. The $5 HF offer is about 1/2 that of
offers on eBay, et. als.

Do you prefer those V-cut style strippers, or the ones with individual holes for each gauge, like this one at the same price from HF?

I've got a couple of different versions of the individual hole style. One unbranded version I bought close to 50 years ago from a surplus dealer, complete with uninsulated handles, and another, a high quality 'name brand' I bought a couple of years ago, expecting to get sharper cutting edges & more reliable stripping. The 50 yr old pair (with 50 years of use) actually works better than the brand new name brand stripper.

Low cost Products that attempt to achieve optimum pre-strip
penetration of the insulation are a mixed bag. Suggest

Yup . . . you noticed! There's a constellation
of variables for achieving consistent stripping
action on the various wire products. This is
what gives rise to the virtual snow storm of
stripping blade choices on pages 7 thru 11 in:

So when evaluating suitability to task for these
v-notch tools, you need to factor in your own
sense of grip calibration. It's not difficult.
But if you try a selection of tools on the wire-of-the-day,
you'll quickly adjust your technique to maximize
results with the tool of choice.
I've used the el-cheeso tools for decades with
satisfactory performance but I really like the
feel and function of the new kid on the block!
It's a low cost experiment . . . recommend interested
builders acquire a pair and spend some time
getting up close and personal with some wire
scraps.
Remember, you're not trying to cut the insulation
down to the wire surface . . . only to 'damage'
it deeply enough to fail cleanly when you tug
on it.
