I am replacing both tube gear on my KF 2 with recently purchased used gear.
Both gear look undamaged at all, but the left gear looks to be toed in
[more upright] than the right. May sound stupid but if this is the case
could this be fixed by putting a thicker rubber cushion on the bungee end
to keep the gear from pulling as far up when the bungees are tight? Has
anyone ever tried this or have any opinions, from reading some of the
archives this seems to have been a fairly common problem. Thanks Mark

Mark,
I had a model IV with the tube gear, be it right or wrong I used a pipe over
my axle to torque the gear leg to the desired position. The tire standing
more upright I think is actually referred to the camber of which I set mine
to straight up with the bungie tight. The toe in which I reference as the
distance between the front of the tires tighter than the distance between
the rear of the tires I set to straight to slightly toed out. My reasoning
for this was from my days racing snowmobiles and setting up the skis, If you
have the skis toed in (fronts closed than the rear) and were making a left
turn and had your weight thrown so it loaded the outside ski your machine
would dart left while your body inertia was heading right and off you go. I
think we can apply the same reasoning to the landing gear especially with
the wings hanging out there it is easy to get one wheel loaded more than the
other as the plane rocks and roll out or if you land slightly crabbed I
think you can experience the same thing. Either way that is how and why I
set my gear the way I did, I flew it for over 4 years in all weather and
field conditions and never had an incident or on set of a ground loop. I am
sure others will chime in with their experiences (and I hope they do) Enjoy.

Come to think of it your are right and my terminology is wrong. I hope I
don't have a toe in problem also but the left gear looks to be a more
upright angle than the right and the left tire is on the outboard edge
where the right tire is pretty much flat on the ground. I have read where
some have bent the gear like you did, but the way my luck is going I am
hesitant to give it a go. I kinda figured if I could essentially shim the
thing from getting horizontal along the bottom of the cabin it may do the
same thing. Looking for opinions and appreciate your feedback. Thanks Mark

analogy on the destabilizing effect of toe in.

Mark,
Only thing I can think of about shimming is if it needs allot it will make
that leg shorter to the ground and farther out from center causing the plane
to sit tilted on the runway and the centerline of the aircraft to be offset
from the centerline of the gear. Again it would depend how much you needed
to shim it.
