Check your brushes in the motor. and make sure they are not too old. There
is a service kit for older beech that modifies the electrical system of the
gear that reroutes the high current load out of things like your up and down
limit switches and changes them to a "control" system. Im not sure of the
kit number but we install it in our shop when the gear travel time exceeds
about 10 seconds. Especially in the up direction, if your system takes more
than 10 seconds, you should replace the selector switch and the limit
switches and it would be a good idea to install the kit....

Just an Idea,
Charles

Circuit breaker itself is suspect. Age can be the original factor and then
being "cycled" several times can mean its retirement time for that one.
Check that before doing more expensive stuff.

I have a V35A.... when we flew it the other day, we had to go to a manual
gear extension because the circuit breaker kept blowing when we moved the
switch.

We have it up on jacks now, and it will pull the gear up very nicely...
but

Quote:
extending the gear is another story. The gear starts to extend, but then
after about 3 seconds of operation, the circuit breaker goes.... reset the
circuit breaker and you have another 3 seconds of operation before it goes
again.

We've taken all the connections off and cleaned them without any change.
There doesn't seem to be any binding when manually extending the gear.

The plane just came out of annual.

Any ideas?

Mike Maloney

If you are an ABS member and have the ABS CD, Lew Gage has a number of articles about trouble shooting the beech landing gear electrical system.

It would seem somewhere you have a high ohm reading causing high current draw on extension. Usually the gear motor gives trouble retracting, since this is the highest load time, not extending. It would pay to check the curcuit out with an ohm meter including all the switches.

Mike,

I had a problem where the gear circuit breaker popped every time the gear
came up. We had the gear motor overhauled, and although it needed it, that
wasn't the problem. My AP finally caught that the ammeter was showing a
load after the gear was up until the breaker popped. Turned out it was
one of the gear up limit switches. There are a total of four normally on or
off switches plus one for the gear warning horn located under the front
seats. One of them was sticking when the gear came up thus not shutting off
the motor which ultimately caused the breaker to pop. We replaced all of
them, and it works fine. Arrell has them for $13 apiece. Hope this helps.

Good Morning Hoot and Mike,

A very quick check to catch such a failure is to check
the amount of free turn that is left after the gear is
retracted or extended. On all except the very newest
Bonanzas, and derivative aircraft, there should be
between one eighth and one quarter turn of free motion
left after the motor hits the stop switch and the
mechanism hits the internal mechanical stop.

That check should absolutely be made any time any work
is performed on, or any problem develops with, that
landing gear. I check it myself about every
twenty-five to fifty hours of operation all year long.

If the mechanism is allowed to hit the mechanical
stops, severe internal damage may occur.

The travel can be easily checked while airborne by
trying to turn the handle to the right, clockwise.
(the cranking UP mode). If you are nervous about
possibly turning it the wrong way, you could pull the
circuit breaker before trying the check, but if the
landing gear has retracted fully, turning it to the
right should not be dangerous at all. If you try to
extend it without pulling the circuit breaker, you
could break a wrist if the motor takes over.

The same method will allow you to check the down
travel after the landing gear has been extended
normally. For the gear down travel check, turn the
handle counter clockwise which is the gear down mode
of operation.

Any help at all?
