John's pics are great, and I'm probably going to get
hounded off the list - (I know I'm here on sufferance
since I don't fly a Kolb) - but I have to correct the
statement "can't beat a Kolb for a camera platform."

Take a look at the Maxair Drifter and the Air Cam.
There's a reason they are the "camera platforms" of
choice for National Geographic photographers -
unlimited visibility for 180° around you and nothing
whatsoever above you. Take off the nosepod and there's
not much in front or below you either!! :>)

Arty,

The Kolb will get to picture altitude sooner! Here are a couple of fall pics and one of you and your flamed-out drifter. One picture is of the Rogue River just downstream from my place, the other is from my trip to France two weeks ago. Cool flame job!

WOW!
At this point only 2 questions come to mind: How did you prevent fogging of the screen? and How did you stay warm (or was it summer)?

Maybe it's a weight thing. I had a Hummer for 12 years and put 550 hours on
it, it was a good little airplane. It was dependable and reliable, and had
fair control authority. Then I sold the Hummer, got the J-6, sold it, got
the MKIII. Years later, the Hummer showed up again, the guys who had
purchased it asked me to get it back in license. I did, and then flew it to
it's new home. Wow. Compared to the control authority of my MKIII, flying
the Hummer took on a sort of vagueness. Last year I got to fly an original
Firestar that was under 300 pounds, maybe even part 103 legal. It felt about
the same way. Flew a Drifter a couple years ago, it was like a big Hummer,
better control authority, more solid but similar, not as civilized as a
Kolb. Have several hours in an Aircam, it flies rock solid, and also feels a
lot heavier than a Kolb. If money is no object and the goal is a pure camera
platform, get an Aircam. If you want a camera platform that is practical and
pleasant to fly, get a MKIII and make two sets of doors, one set partially
cut away for taking pictures without reflections in them.

OK, I want to play too. Here is Tomhannock reservoir near Albany, NY. There was a flight of 4 A10's flying by. One of them rocked his wings so he must have had radar lock on me. I grabbed a handful of chaff just in case. Wink

I know this is a Kolb list - but a request is a
request - right? :>) To keep it as Kolb-related as
possible, three of these 5 shots were taken on the way
to/at the Kolb MV fly-in in May 2006. (I flew there
in my Maxair Drifter from Sandy, Oregon with a buddy
flying his Sky Raider.)

I sometimes choose to include part of the Drifter in
the photo, as I've done with one of these - but when I
do so, I have to twist and turn for the shot.
