I’m sorry I left out that you should always stick your tank when you check for water before every flight. I just figured it was obvious, As for the filling the tanks before bedtime, it must be a location thing. In Southern Ontario we have an amazing amount of morning dew on a daily basis and at CYKF almost every dam morning is fog or mist. So filling the tanks not only ensures that there will be fuel there and is a very easy habit to get into but it also reduces the volume of air that can get into your tanks to condensate. Nevertheless, yes before every flight visual inspections of both tanks and sticking the tank is in the walk around.

I just had an interesting thing happen with fuel. One of the drains was leaking during the last flight I took in the PA28-140 I just started flying. I noticed it after stopping to drop off the CFI who just gave me my biennial. He told me to look the plane over that we had just spent 2 hours in and I found a blue streak of moisture on the bottom of the fuseleage. The forward drain, buy the cowl, did not seal when I checked the sumps. He told me I needed to let them snap shut, (I didn't know). The fuel burn was quite high for the first 2 hours but I still had plenty of fuel. I guess the point is anything can happen.

Need a fuel stick? You can order 3/8 " diameter clear acrylic tubing from Aircraft Spruce that does a nice job. Just stick it in, put your finger over the top hole, pull it out and read the level.

To calibrate the blank tube, start with an empty tank, add gas until it reads in the tube and then add fuel gallon by gallon until full (marking the tube as you go). I used a cheap electrical engraver to mark the lines and amounts.

It's 85¢ a foot for the tubing from aircraft spruce or $20 from Sporty's. I've made up a few of these over the years and appreciate the fact that I know exactly how much fuel I have before I go for a flight.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tim

One challenge you will find, with dipping the tanks on the 601HDS model, is that due to the leading edge wing tank geometry, the tank can be almost half full before any fuel reaches the far (upper outboard) end beneath the cap.  In fact when I look in and see fuel just barely reaching the bottom outside end, I know I have about 1/2 a tank.  I've debated making some sort of a longer probe that would insert to the very bottom/inboard end of the tank, but I'm afraid it might get tangled up with the float system on the qty. indicator.  fwiw.

I guess there are a couple of ways to accurately estimate the fuel reserve. The one I like is the capacitance fuel indicator. For this to work on the 601 you would need two probes for each tank one for the inside of the tanks and one for the outside of the tanks. These fuel level systems require a small reference probe at the lowest level. the good news about the reference probe is because it is at the lowest level of the tank system any water in the tanks can be immediately indicated.

On the other hand taking the caps off and looking inside with one of those new explosion proof LED flashlights works pretty good too! Just be sure to get the sealed one!
