I just finished reading an article on the Diamond DA42 Twin Star

Standard fuel capacity: 52 gallons
TBO: 1000 hrs
Climb rate at 104 knots: 800 fpm

Cruise Speed (at) 80% power (at) 10,000 feet: 156 knots TAS on 6.3 gph (each
engine) or 12.6 gph.
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $4.20/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $52.92/hr
Cruise Speed (at) 60% power (at) 10,000 feet: 138 knots TAS on 4.4 gph (each
engine) or 8.8 gph.
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $4.20/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $36.96/hr
Cruise Speed (at) 50% power (at) 10,000 feet: 127 knots TAS on 3.6 gph (each
engine) or 7.2 gph.
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $4.20/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $30.24/hr

Useful load (as tested): 985 lbs. (this is the useful load AFTER they
get a gross weight increase approved. The actual useful load, on the
plane as tested, was
Price as tested: $487,212

-----------------
Let's look at my Tiger for a comparison.

Standard fuel capacity: 52 gallons
TBO: 2000 hrs
Climb rate at 104 knots: 1200 fpm

Cruise Speed (at) 80% power (at) 10,000 feet: 152 knots TAS on 13.8 gph.
(over redline)
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $3.85/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $53.13/hr
Cruise Speed (at) 60% power (at) 10,000 feet: 145 knots TAS on 10.3 gph.
(2700 rpm)
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $3.85/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $39.65/hr
Cruise Speed (at) 50% power (at) 10,000 feet: 132 knots TAS on 8.2 gph.
(2550 rpm)
- - - At the current cost for Jet A at Auburn $3.85/gal, that is
an hourly cost, for fuel, of: $31.57/hr

Useful load (as tested): 980 lbs.
Price as tested: $90,000
==========

So, for roughly 50 to 75 cents per hour operating costs disadvantage, I
can fly about roughly the same or better cruise speed. For a "Price as
tested" difference: $397,000, I can fly at $50.00/hr (for fuel) for
over 7,900 hours. At an average use of 140 hours per year, that's 56
years of flying.

True, I don't have a glass cockpit, leather interior, ice protection,
or even IFR capable. But, then, who cares?

But not if your engine is burning Jet A! <G> I don't think it would last
that long!

In a V35B this fall headed to CO from Madera, CA at 11,500 ft. we were
doing 159 kts TAS on 10.5 gph, full throttle at only 2200 rpm and 30F lean
of peak EGT! That's with about 150 hp or 50% for the IO-550, 300 hp engine.
At these slow engine and prop speeds the efficiency of the fuel injected
IO-550 Continental engine and Hartzell blended airfoil prop cannot be beat.
With 115 gal useable we could have gone to Colorado Springs and back without
refueling (about 10hrs of flying). That really helps when you have gas at
your own strip that costs only $3.00/gal!

Now if you had an angle valve cylinder engine with the same compression
ratio and fuel injection, Gary, I'll bet you would be doing the same speed
as you now are and burning at least 1 gph less fuel, probably more. The big
issue is the engine specific fuel consumption decreases considerably and
prop efficiency increases as the engine speed decreases, especially when you
operate way on the lean side of peak EGT with balanced fuel injectors.

I'm not trying to detract from your comparison with the Diamond twin. In
fact I applaud your efforts and achievement in what your have done with the
cowl, etc. on your Tiger. Just bragging a bit, I guess, about the
efficiency of a stock Bonanza airframe and engine when operated properly
with balanced fuel injectors.

I smell a traitor on the list:)

Me thinketh that he liketh bonanas more than cats:)

Perhaps a little black Sambo who would turn the Tigers to butter to grease
his bonanas with?

Just remember all the Tigers would say is GR-R-RRRR!

FLYV35B where does your allegiance lie?

Please do tell, do you show your Tiger allegiance on the Bonanza net?

Or has that constant V-tail yaw wobble got you all mixed up?

Pretty Good! Who knows where my allegiance lies, probably with whatever
does the best job for the mission at hand! For right now my AA-1C with the
O-320 engine satisfies part of the mission, but I'm gravitating toward an RV
down the road, or maybe even a Lancair Legacy! Maybe even the new German
REMOS LS aircraft (talk about efficiency) with a full feathering prop or a
motor glider. I try to be objective about whatever I am comparing in
contrast to some who think "and God only created Grummans". And what about
the former Tiger owner gal who showed up at Fredericksburg this year with
her brand new RV-10, should she be tarred and feathered and run out of town?

After looking at her RV-10, somehow I don't think she's going to be crying
to long. With a limited amount of money to spend on aircraft we all have to
make "tough" choices. Money is almost always going to be part of the
decision making process on what or how many aircraft to own.

I'm all for the Legacy. AND, I was looking at the Remos a few days
ago. Cool little plane. I'd also be interested in another Citabria.
If I only had some rich relatives that would leave me a LOT of money.
