Great Job Larry,
So far no cracks on my thin plates but my wheelpants are off and and
keeping a close eye on the situation.
Are you planning on turning up a bunch of plates all at once...i.e do
you need us to order them now, or are you OK to make them as one offs as
needs arise?
Thanks Larry....
Frank

Hi Frank,
I've turned 4 sets of 3 for .065 wall struts and this week began a
fourth set of 3 to practice TIG welding the gear
plates. The sample strut tube has to be a perfect sliding fit and I
find that TIG provides the least amount of diametral
change. First sample tubes were thinner, so the next set will tell us
if the machined diameter will hold dimension after
welding. I always practice a critical weld several times to obtain
optimum form, depth of penetration, etc. Tomorrow
I start on the heavier material and will have a much better feeling for
if this process is going to be o.k. If it becomes
necessary to make a few more, I'll just do them as one offs. Have to
cut the samples thru to see if penetraton is where
its needed. You should be hearing from me later this week, but.don't do
anything until you hear I'm satisfied with
this idea. My welds look beautiful, but the thin tubes got out of round
by .003 while heating and cooling.
Have been playing with leaky inner tubes this past week, so little else
got done over the holidays.
