Has anyone considered a removable step to reduce drag?

The amount of drag on the steps, IMHO, especially with the airfoil shape,
would be unmeasurable as far as a difference in speed. On a Lancair
cruising at 300Kts it may be a big deal, but on an RV-10 cruising at 175, I
don't think it would be worth the trouble. It is not hard to make it
removeable, though. We are making them removeable by opening an access
panel in the baggage floor as many on the list have talked about. The
benefit of this is not having the step in the way when working on the plane,
especially before the wings are installed. It can really do a number on the
shins if you don't watch out. Also, if it loosens over time and with use,
it will be helpful to be able to drill the hole again and put a bigger bolt,
or replace the step if necessary.

 Do not archive.

Mine are removable, but not for drag reasons, but to get the fuselage out of
my basement. Making them removable as I have, shows me that it is too
difficult to take these on and off for the reasons of flight.

You could make custom receivers that the step tube could insert into, but
you would have to modify the existing step by cutting off the tube from the
step and re welding a smaller tube that would go into the old one which is
 anchorred into the fuselage.

Personally, I think its more work than its worth. Better to gap seal all
 your control surfaces.
