As a long time member & officer of a local EAA Chapter I think you have
raised a very question. I don't have the answer but would be interested in
the results.
We, the EAA Chapter, hosted the start of the Copperstate Race for several
years. Aircraft Spruce not longer sponsors it and we understand that it was
the insurance companies & lawyers that convinced Jim that his "exposure" was
too great. The bean counters & bottom feeders have struck once again. Makes
me wonder about the Young Eagles flight in the same area of Washington that
killed the pilot & two Y.E.'s is also headed for court. KABONG

(As I read it) The EAA was sued and National accepted 50% responsibility
because the local chapter failed in the most obvious need to require the
Arlington City Council and Fire Department to stage adequate police and
fire onsite for the perceived risk being created during the needed time.

As a former producer of airshows, it is the second most valuable thing
to do beyond getting a coveted military jet team. That is acquiring a
risk management policy which includes police, fire and paramedics. The
show I created in 1988 had a Hawker Hunter go into a residential
community which was build since the inception of the show. Ironically
the most vocal opponent of airshows was away and it was her home that
was vaporized.

Amazing how the fickle finger of fate metes out justice.

Yes, there was no loss of life by either animal or human. The only
tragedy was the loss of trees which were also incinerated in the yard.
The accident which happened this year should be posted by the NTSB in
the next few weeks.

Eighteen years without and accident or injury. And no, you would not
want to know what it costs to have overtime for police, fire and
paramedics. Even the bus drivers get in on the overtime. Guess it was
just shy of the $4 million that the EAA chapter and membership will pay
though.
