Hi,
I know that John is chaffing at the bit to get back in the air, but since he cannot, I thought that I would go for him. After all what are friends for?
The weather here in the North west has been great for the last two days. Today was 59 with very little wind, so I wheeled Dart out of the hanger fueled up and headed north for the Owyhee Canyon. There are some spots that have seemed to be pretty good landing and fishing spots, and I have wanted to see them for a long time. I had a bit of a tail wind up at about 5500 feet so I throttled back to 5400 rpms and let it push me along at about 76 mph. After an hours flying the Canyon opened up a bit and there were sand bars, trees full of Deer and a runway. As is usual the runway had a pile of cows on it. Just not sure what it is about a bare runway that cows like to stand on it, but it is a natural drive for cows I guess. I strafed them twice, but they would not move. The other side of the river had a little lean to with a two track leading up to it, so I set down on that, and went exploring. At the river when I was flying my down wind I noticed that there was a hole dug back into the river bank. Once I got there I could tell for sure that it was a Beaver lodge dug into the bank. They had been cutting trees and falling them into the river. From the height off the ground one of them was a really big one, standing about two and half feet above the ground. The video is of the take off and you can see from the bumps it is nice to have big wheels.

After that I decided that I wanted to go to Owyhee State Airport, "Pelican point" It was a mere 9 miles north, so off I went. It is a gravel strip out on a peninsula that is 1800 feet long. There is a wind sock, a couple of tie downs a Large potty made of the plastic stuff, and a little shack. Then it was time for the trip home. I climbed up to 6500 feet and found that I indeed had a head wind, but the terrain was so hostile that I stayed up there and only managed 50 mph on the ground. I touched down at the home strip and when I shut it off, I had traveled 139 miles and burned 10 gallons of fuel. I still am seeing very little difference in fuel burn whether I am turning 6000 or 5400 RPM's. I would not have believed that would be the case.

Looks really neat up there! hope I can fly there one day. I can't go
anywhere where I don't see powerlines and fences everywhere and that's once
I get out of the city(45 minutes of flight time)...
Tommorow is going to be 69 degrees (Texas). I called the boss and said I'm
not going to be able to make it. First flight of 2007.
