As someone who's owned a 360 Long EZ and a 540 Berkut - the power to
weight and roll rate can be fixed.

However.

An acquaintance of mine at work is thinking about building a
homebuilt. He was leaning toward a fixed gear Lancair Legacy. I'm
urging him towards an RV-8 or F1. My question is - how does the F1
quick build kit compare to the RV quick build?

Hi Tim,

I just noticed your comment on the rocket list regarding Rocket vs
Long EZ fun factor. The Harmon is more fun. This is primarily a
function of the increase in the power to weight ratio, increased
roll authority, and control harmony. Additional factors are full
stall capability, and the somewhat intangible but considerable tail
wheel attraction (I learned to fly in a tail dragger and was forever smitten).

But: the efficiency, compound curves and unique appearance of a
well done EZ are unmatched in my judgment. The semi reclining
position (with excellent visibility) is wonderful and enables a
person to fly very long distances in comfort. Smile If I was not
fortunate enough to have enjoyed both, but had to pick one: The
Long EZ. Mine forever changed my life and gave me experiences I
will forever cherish.

Stay warm up there,

dave

I think you will find the F-1 kit to be of outstanding quality, and the end
product is multiple orders of magnitude better than an RV-8. My un-biased
opinion of course, being an F-1 kit builder and now pilot Smile

You get a better engine, the IO-540. A better looking aircraft IMO, and you
get more top speed, shorter take off rolls, faster roll rates, amazing
acceleration, virtually the same fuel flows at the same speeds if you can
get yourself to fly that slow, and a climb rate comparison in public would
simply not be in good taste, so we will not talk about that.

Honestly I would not hesitate to recommend an F-1 kit if it's in your
budget.

Greg, it was mentioned yesterday that the tail was more stout than a
typical RV kit. What exactly was changed?

Richard,
I bought RV8 QB kit #15 from the original owner in 99. I sold it in 2001. It was an excellent product with outstanding rivet work and fit of parts. The fuselage was back-riveted and of the highest quality of workmanship. It wasn't however, my RV4.
I thought Van had reached "nirvana" in kit building with this QB until I saw one of Mark Fredericks HPA F-1 Rocket QB kits at Oshkosh. HPA is in the Czech Republic, formerly building Migs and other factory aircraft. The workmanship and kit quality is easily equal to and in my humble opinion better than Van's QB kits.
It doesn't take a Rocket scientist Smile to realize the F-1 is a better looking and performing airplane, the RV4 of the new millenium.

My 2 cents..

Yes the F-1 tail is designed for the higher speeds of the rocket and is
beefed up at key attachments compared to an RV-4 tail. However RV-4 tails
has proved to be up to the task with hundreds of HRII and some F-1s (mine
included) that fly with RV-4 tails.
