Anyone have thoughts about using one of these for a workshop?
http://www.iport.com/sales.html
Costs around $2100 delivered and freshly painted -- is it worth it?
I have a basement with limited access and no garage. I need space from somewhere, whether it's one of these, rented storage, or something. Suggestions anyone?
BTW thanks to everyone for being so responsive and helpful to my previous posts!
Thanks,
Tom

I recall that someone DID build their Zenith in a cargo container. But I don't know where I read it.
I assume it would have some resale value so the cost would be even cheaper.

I live in an apartment with no garage so I built my Zodiac in a 24'
cargo trailer that I bought for $4800 and parked in a outdoor storage
lot space that I rented for $35.00 a month. So it's certainly
possible to build in a container like this, and you can always sell
the container after you finish the plane. You do what you gotta do.

Hi Tom,
I guess the shipping container is a good starting point - depending on the climate where you live. You would probably want to add some ventilation openings and lots of lighting and power outlets.
One of the guys in my local EAA club rented a hangar at the airport and is building his plane there. It has lots of space and sufficient light and ventilation, but not enough heat to be comfortable in the winter. I live in the NW rain forest, so it doesn't get all that cold. Still, it is hard to work when the temperature is near freezing.
You might want to talk to your local chapter members and seek local options. I am sure many of them have faced exactly the same problem before you.
Good luck,
Paul

If you are going to put it on your own property you need to see if there would be any zoning issues. You might also want to consider a fabric covered shelter. We see a lot of these showing up on farms. Some of the structures made this way are huge and come with at least a 15 year guarantee on the fabric. If I ever decide to keep my XL at the airstrip by my house I've considered using a hangar made this way.
Visit http://www.shelterlogic.com/ for some examples.

Those fabric shelters look like they could be a viable solution, except they have no floor...right?

My company built semi mobile debarkers for the forest industry. We used 40 foot shipping containers with partition walls to form an MCC room, Hydraulic Power Unit Room and a small central workshop. Great idea, but not the best lawn ornament. Used ones are dirt cheap.

Regarding fabric shelter - floor is your choice - dirt, wood, concrete.

Don't use dirt. I did that and found out it lets all the moisture through and rodents and snakes and I HATE SNAKES - (spawns of Satan - kill them all). At least put down plywood but I'd say pour concrete and put some lights in it.
P.S. when it rains, puddles form in the overhang areas and SNAKES get under and around and IN it and did I mention I HATE SNAKES - I don't care if they are friendly pets that you put on a leash, cuddle, and show your friends - KILL them all.

And we all know what would happen if snakes got into your airplane workshop unnoticed.....SNAKES ON A M***F*** PLANE!
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hey,
Most snakes are good. Bull Snakes keep pack rats and rattle snakes away as they eat them. Many snakes eat bugs. Small snakes fly well and remain in your pocket. Yep! Snakes on A Plane really sucked, but some snakes are fine.

You guys are all cracking me up!! I don't care if the snakes eat bugs, rodents, cows, or even my MOOCH-in-law, I want them all dead - evil ugly creatures from HELL.
I was thinking of taking over Steve Irwin's crocodile hunter show but I think they'd have to edit out the parts of me bashing snakes with a shovel and burning them all while screaming like a sissy girl.
Bottom line is this: Build your airplane wherever you can - if that means a temporary instant garage - great - at least you're building and looking forward to getting out of bed every day - you'll be like a kid.
Also, I built part of my airplane in a storage unit which had electricity. It was fenched and I only had to pay $5 more/month for electric. I think I had a 14x30 unit - but that's an idea too.
Best of luck and KILL THE SNAKES and no I won't be going to see that snakes on a plane movie - Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones who found a snake in a cockpit was enough for me - even if it was a pet - and can bring world peace - I'd still throw his slithery butt OUT of the plane - and hopefully it'd LAND on my Mother-In-Law!!!!

Yes but during that 6 mos of sledding they have a rum called “Screech”, by far the best rum in the world if you enjoy a super heavy dark rum that is! But then again we use Molasses on our pancakes instead of maple syrup. I took some to Jon Croke the last time we visited, I’m not sure he enjoyed it as he prefers a light rum, but we had a good time. The main city for the island is built on a hill and all streets head for water at the bottom! Not the best place for skateboards. Seriously, it is a land like no other and has a natural beauty unspoiled by civilization. Plus I have a hard time believing you can find a friendlier people outside Cape Breton!

Don't be wishy-washy. How do you REALLY feel about snakes?
The containers sound like a great idea, if only for storage so you can store the materials and tools you're not using that day to maximize the usability of the space you have. Or... you could sleep in it and build in your bed room. Easy to keep snakes out, too.

All,
Here is my airplane factory. It is a Cover-It shelter that I picked up for "FREE". It had some tears in it so that is why there is a Blue Poly on the inside. It keeps the snow and rain off of me.
I don't have problems with snakes, since I live at an altitude of 9,100 feet. Snakes don't like the thin/cold air. I get an average of 130"-150" of snow each year, so I did some truss-beefing-up to help in that area. For Mooch-in-laws, this is where I reside, instead of the house.
Size is 12'x30' but since there is a door on the other side, I walled of the last 4' and use that as storage. The bench is 4'x12.5' with storage shelves. The upper shelf is for un-formed flat sheets of Aluminum. The steel-tube frame along the wall is for the Smyth Sidewinder I am also building.
Anyway, try to do whatever it takes to get your plane built. For temperature extremes, Summer time is ok, Winter time, I usually call it quits and go in the house when it cools down to 18-20F.
Good Luck!!!!
