I'm in the process of wiring my flap motor for my 701. I have a 12V
Warner Linear Actuator with only 2 wires. The actuator will reverse
it's direction when I switch the 2 leads on my battery +/- terminals.
My question; is there a "rocker" type switch that will work for this
installation and how is it wired? Thanks in advance for any help. Jim

Jim,

You can use a double pole double throw switch. Make sure it is appropriately rated for your flap motor or you can do it with two relays and a single pole double throw switch. Check out AeroElectric's website.

If you really want a rocker switch (as opposed to a toggle) then use the Ray
Allen RS2-5 (not the plain RS2). The RS2-5 is rated for 5 amps while the RS2
is only rated for 1 amp. It costs you $26 but they will throw in the label
for free.

Switch: www.rayallencompany.com/products/switches.html

Labels: half way down on www.rayallencompany.com/products/indsens.html

For a mere $15 you can get a quality DPDT toggle switch here (look for
S700-2-7):

www.bandc.biz/cgi-bin/ez-catalog/cat_display.cgi?11X358218#s700-2-7

The S700-2-7 is a two pole switch that normally sits with the lever in the
middle and momentarily pushed up or down.

See figure 11-15 of the article below for how to wire any "double pole,
double throw" (DPDT) switch to reverse polarity:

www.aeroelectric.com/articles/switches.pdf

I assume your linear actuator has internal limit switches.

Hi James,

You want a DPDT Momentary switch for this purpose. The 601 drawings
I received from ZAC include a wiring diagram for this function. I
also did one for my own installation that includes a 15 amp circuit
breaker (the size recommended by ZAC), the flap switch, wiring for
both limit switches, and the flap motor. I have no idea how much
current your particular flap motor can draw, but with no other
information I would use the same size circuit breaker and switch as
the 601 drawing calls for.

I used a toggle switch for mine. If you want a rocker style switch
instead of a toggle you can probably find one from one of the big
online electronic component houses like Digikey or Mouser. If you
are not used to this kind of supplier it can be a bit
overwhelming. I would be glad to look one up for you if you give me
your final specifications including current requirement and color and
size preference. The most important specs are the current and
DPDT-Momentary. Just send me an email directly if you would like
some further help.

I don't think you can read my drawing file for the flap wiring
diagram. I used Autosketch to draw it. If you want to see it I can
take a picture and send you a JPG file.

Good luck,

Paul

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> In addition to these below, you might also consider automotive window or seat switches, which come dirt cheap from a junkyard, and are DC rated, with pretty good amperage capabilities. Some of them look pretty good, too.

I've ordered a 10 amp breaker for my flap circuit,
which is what ZAC calls out on 6-S-2 of the 03/04
version of drawings for the 601XL. I couldn't find a
current draw rating on my flap motor, so I'm not sure
what is required. Does anyone know if there's been a
change in the requirment for the flap motor amperage?

I measured the steady-state draw of the factory actuator at 3-4 amps with no
mechanical load. I assume there is an initial surge that my meter doesn't
see and that the draw will be higher when actually moving the flaps in
flight.

I can add that a 7.5 amp fuse is not sufficient under flight loads. I use a
15 a and it is fine.

Thanks for the info Craig, and Gary, I also have the
15a circuit shown on 6-B-20 (didn't see that before),
so I'll just reorder a 15a breaker so I won't worry.

Two follow-up questions for some of the responders:

Why DPDT and not SPDT? Maybe there's a difference with the 601 and 701 (I'm a 701 builder), but it seems with only one linear actuator you don't need a double pole. Am I missing something?

Second, does anyone know who sells toggle switches that actually look like a flap handle, as opposed to the generic looking toggle switch?

Regarding your original question Jim, I've purchased Bob Nuckoll's Aeroelectic Connection. He gives an excellent wiring diagram for an electric flap system. In the diagram, he recommends a 15 amp breaker for the flap motor and 5 amp breaker for the flap control (relays and limit switches).

If you are not using relays, you need the DPDT switch to reverse the polarity

The reason for the DPDT is to reverse the polarity one side middle is B+ and the other middle connection is - and you couldn't have that with a SPDT switch.

Hi Dan,

The DPDT switch is needed because both the leads on the motor must be
switched between power and ground. With a single pole switch one of
the motor leads must be permanently connected to one of the power
leads, and this would not allow for reversal of the motor direction.

I found a switch at Radio Shack that has a flattened toggle. It is
not as similar to flaps as the Cessna switch, but it is a small step
in the right direction.
