Has anyone made a wooden W10 wing with fuel tank in it? Any thoughts on this?

I have. But it was not a "wet wing".
It is a Pitts with a center section fuel/smoke tank combination. Mine holds
about 5 or 6 gallons. I welded up an aluminum tank, shaped to fit in the
center section cavity. I just blocked it in good and solid before I put the
top 1/8" plywood on. No problems. It has been in there for about twenty six
years. Tested it good with soap and water for leaks and used an inflated
balloon to supply the air pressure for testing. The first one blew out like
a foot ball when I tested it with too much air. (just a couple of pounds
caused it to deform)

I'm trying to eliminate the inside cabin fuel tank. Could more than one tank be placed in series inside the wing to carry 15-20 gal?

I bet they could but would not comment unless I could see and study the
drawings. Taylorcraft had some small light weight wing tanks that held about
6 gallons. It should not be hard to make some light weight tanks to hold 10
gallons per side and slip them into a section of the wings. You could even
build two of them per side if needed and pipe them together. I think it
would be a very positive design change though if you can do it. Very nice
airplane..

You could always make a metal winged Tailwind Smile There are a couple of
us that are building wet wing Tailwinds and one that is already flying.
Earl Trimble has a website, earltrimble.com that has his story. Earl's
tanks came out to be 18 gal. per side.

About 40 years ago, there was a red Tailwind or Cougar at Weatherford,
Texas with tip tanks--
at least they appeared to be tip tanks. ' May be some problems with fuel
flow in steep turns
and low fuel but the plumbing design and fuel pumps in the wings could take
care of that
problem.

When I was building my metal wings, I thought about fuel in the wings. I admit it has advantages of allowing more room behind the panel and moving the CG aft a bit. However, it looked to me that it would be a complicated system with multiple tanks, fuel pumps, a lot of plumbing, and possibly a fairly significant amount of unusable fuel. I came to the conclusion that a single tank just behind the firewall, feeding the engine by gravity was the best solution.

Admittedly, I did not build any of a wing fuel tank. Others who have may show that my conclusions were in error.

Wow, the list comes alive.

So many of these matronics lists are virtually dead.

I am a tailwind fan. Always have been, always will be. Could never get
started. In the mean time I built a Pitts and an RV6. The tailwind still
lingers though. I have a nice RV6, but I think the TW is a more practical
plane when one considers every thing, such as cost to build and simplicity.
Couple that with a very respectable cruise speed per HP and the TW is a
close shoice.

Vans plans are not real clear in a lot of areas. The second time around they
would be, but the first time they are somewhat un-clear.
As for the metal wings. I would sure look into them if I were a builder and
I had not yet stsrted a set of wings.

Keep this list going... Let's trade rides... I may get the torch fired up.

Phil, The Tailwind people are mainly using the Yahoo forum now instgead of Matronics, with over 630 members and growing nicely very active. Check it out: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TailwindForum/

Jim Rusk is a carbon fiber pro, and he has 50 gals of fuel in his wing tanks. Wings are wood. He may give his view, if you ask for it, he is on the Yahoo forum. I think he questioned whether it was worth the extra work involved. Also fueling the plane is not so easy.
Attached is a picture of his wing and you can see the tank fuel caps. George

Phil, I read a quote many years ago from a Tailwind builder who said, "The plans give you a wonderful opportunity to use your imagination."

I doubt I would have gotten mine done without the help from folks on the internet.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies...I'm getting more excited about the possibility of wing tanks. Looking at the wing design (see attachment) wing ribs 4,5 and 6 could be replaced in between the spars by a tank made of fiberglass with wood stringers on top and bottom so that the plywood skin can then glue onto the stringers. wood in front and back of the tank structure could help attach to the top of the spars...but before I do anything, I'll look at what others have done. No need to reinvent wheels here...any ideas?

Jon Staudacher, in Bay City Michigan, has wet wood wings in his competition planes
and also in several others that he has built for himself. Perhaps he would share the technique and limitations.

Problem is that when you look at the area available between the ribs, you have less than 6 gallons available. I decided it was not worth it and will use a fuselage tank behind the seats.

Callbie's metal wing would be the way to go for tank capacity.
